JOB SUMMARY
This position will oversee and manage retention efforts for international students, both undergraduate and graduate. This person will oversee cross-cultural programming for international students and bridge connections with domestic students. This person will oversee the planning and execution of international student orientation and collaborate with other departments on campus to create additional engagement opportunities. This position will also advise F-1 and J-1 international students on immigration advising, cultural adjustment and other concerns for them to be successful at St. Thomas. To serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) by issuing immigration documents and advising international students on U.S. immigration laws. This position requires nights and weekends, when applicable, for programs and activities that occur throughout the year.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Oversee retention efforts for international undergraduate and graduate students (approximately 700 students)
    • Represent OISS on retention work groups and other relevant committees
    • Manage international student orientation, Orientation Connect, regular check-ins with international students
    • Track transfer out process and reasons
    • Oversee regular assessment and ensure learning outcomes are met
  • Advising
    • Advise F-1 and J-1 international students on immigration related issues such as CPT, OPT, Immigration check-ins, travel, Reduced Course Load, etc). Also, advise on personal, academic, financial, social/cultural issues and liaise with St. Thomas departments as needed
    • Serve as a DSO and ARO and attend Immigration/SEVIS training through Minnesota International Educators (MIE) and NAFSA: Association of International Educators
  • Programming
    • Oversee all OISS cross-cultural and social programming for international students, including but not limited to Friendship Family, Thanksgiving host program, graduate programming, Alumni, etc.
    • Serve as liaison with Study Abroad, Center for Student Achievement and Student Affairs departments to provide intercultural programming and ways to connect international and domestic students
    • Represent OISS on relevant committees
    • Oversee International Dinner student committee and guide them in planning and executing the annual International Dinner
    • Manage programming budgets, make decisions regarding programs and events, and oversee assessment of above programs to fulfill learning outcomes and enhance international student retention
  • Supervision/Training
    • Hire, train, and supervise graduate assistant and International Orientation Leaders
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, student affairs, counseling or international related field
  • Three years of experience in program management and/or higher education
  • U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residency as required by the federal government to serve as a Designated School Official and an Alternate Responsible Officer
  • Fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or eligible for legally required exemption such as a medical or religious reason
Preferred Qualifications
  • International experience (i.e., study or travel abroad)
  • Master’s degree
  • Knowledge of at least one foreign language
