Tenant Sanctuary is a tenants rights education and counseling organization located in Santa
Cruz, California. We provide information to tenants about their rights under state, county, and city laws, and help them figure out ways to assert and defend those rights. The organization is run by a Program Coordinator who, in addition to acting as a main counselor to tenants, is responsible for administrative tasks, volunteer training, and collaboration with our staff attorney. We are seeking a new Program Co-Coordinator to work with the existing
Coordinator and carry out Tenant Sanctuary’s goal of supporting tenants to assert their legal rights.

This is an independent contractor position and is compensated at $25 per hour. The position is part time and there will initially be 12-20 hours available each week. The program is actively seeking new funding sources to expand available hours. Additionally,
Co-coordinators will have ongoing flexibility to organize the Tenant Sanctuary program to better accomplish its goals while producing a positive work environment for themselves and volunteers. Complete training will be provided and prior knowledge of California tenant-landlord law is not required.

Co-Coordinator Responsibilities
Counseling

- Help tenants understand their rights as they relate to particular issues in their rented home

- Strategize with tenants about effective ways to use their rights to protect themselves and their households

- Support tenants in stressful, complex, and emotionally painful situations
- Communicate with tenants in person, and by phone, video, or email
- Respond promptly to tenant requests for assistance

Volunteer Management and Support
- Teach volunteer counselors about basic local and statewide tenants’ rights
- Train volunteers in effective rights counseling practices
- Manage volunteer schedules and availability to provide maximum capacity to respond to tenants as they contact Tenant Sanctuary
- Clarify and review aspects of tenants’ rights for counselors when they are unsure about what rights apply to a tenant’s particular situation
- Support counselors with difficult cases

Attorney Collaboration

- Maintain a regular schedule of case review with the staff attorney that is sufficient to ensure difficult cases receive adequate review

- Record questions about tenant cases that neither you nor volunteers can confidently answer

- Review questions with the staff attorney to gain an understanding of risks and rights related to each tenant’s case

- When appropriate, request that the staff attorney review specific cases and write letters on behalf of the tenant

Administration
- Maintain books of account which accurately record expenses and income for the program
- Budget coordinator and attorney time to avoid interruptions in program operations
- Communicate with the program’s fiscal sponsor regarding incoming funds, payment for program expenses, insurance coverage, and office rental
- Maintain office in a neat and tidy condition adequate to host counseling appointments, staff, and volunteers
- Prepare reports on program activities for funders and members of the governing board
- Maintain communication and relationships with public and private funders

Applicants must be familiar with common office software, email systems, video conferencing software, and online collaboration tools such as Google Drive and Calendar.

The following skills/traits are desired but not required:
- English/Spanish bilingual (experience with other Meso-American languages a plus)
- Previous peer counseling experience
- Current renter
- Access to reliable means of transportation
- Reliable cell phone and laptop
