Bronson Orthopedic Surgery Center is offering an excellent opportunity for an experienced Pre/Post-Op Nurse Manager to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate looking to establish and lead a successful ASC start up in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Pre/Post and Pat Manager must meet the competency requirements described for the related Perioperative positions (PAT, Pre/Post staff)

The Manager possesses a broad understanding of the scope of services provided at the Surgery Center and specific to assigned department.

The Manager accepts daily responsibility for supervision of direct reports specific to assigned department, is familiar with direct report level of competencies, arranges for training and optimizing the employee work experience.

The Manager coordinates delivery of patient services specific to assigned department with focus on quality patient outcomes and optimizing the patient experience.

The Manager collaborates with management peer group, providing cross coverage when needed in absence of another department manager (example, help cover in PAT, in pre/post-op). Manager will work closely with the OR manager/leader to maximize efficiency and keep the communication open, regarding delays, or potential problems.

The Manager must demonstrate a functional level of knowledge to uphold compliance to state & federal regulations; accreditation standards and business policies and procedures. Manager will work daily with the Administrator to make certain needs are met, and prevent problems.


Essential Job Responsibilities with demonstrated competency:

  • Estimated 65-80% assuming direct patient care assignment, or upon request
  • Estimated 20-35% personnel management related activities including committee participation


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Registered nurse, holding active licensure in the State of Michigan.
  • Baccalaureate in nursing preferred.
  • Previous management experience of 3 – 5 years preferred.
  • Possesses expert level of competency in one nursing discipline: perioperative nurse of the operating room.
  • Experience in outpatient surgery preferred, along with EPIC charting knowledge
  • Possess exceptional skill in situational awareness, ability to adjust to rapidly changing work environment.

Primary duties & responsibilities:

  • Prepares staff schedule in accordance with staffing plan, scope of services, new processes or procedures, physician absences and other dynamic influences which affect routine delivery of services.
    • Accounts for LATE assignments
    • Allocates TIME for personnel assigned to ongoing QAPI activity, committee attendance, ongoing or short-term special projects
  • Determines allocation of human resources on daily basis according to anticipated work load, complexity of case mix, patient acuity, add-ons, ongoing or short-term special assignments or projects, concurrent indirect patient care activities, committee meetings, staff orientation/training and staff absences while recognizing budgetary constraints.
    • Identifies learning needs of new hire or personnel undergoing cross/training
    • Determines when human resources may be reduced/released due to decrease in productivity.
    • Accounts for adjustments in staffing assignment to preserve equity when possible, and LATE shift assignments.
  • Evaluates staffing plan when staffing vacancies occur and represents hiring plan to Administration based on:
    • current case volume, existing case mix, case complexity, new service line or other change in scope of services
    • defines staff position needed to fill vacancy, considers unlicensed personnel if applicable
    • conducts verification requirements before making final selection
  • Familiarized with policies & procedures specific to department:
    • Maintains reference materials for staff immediate use: e.g. AORN Standards, PDR or other drug reference book, etc.
    • Revises P&P based on national standards, professional organizations – submits revisions to Administrator/Clinical Educator for review/editing
  • Dedicated to the professional development of supervised personnel; by leading with exemplary conduct, and providing mentorship when needed.
  • Supervise personnel by direct observation, to evaluate level of competency, cooperation & collaboration with peers.
  • Intervenes as necessary and with prompt attention to conduct which is unbecoming of a professional in the workplace.
    • Maintains required written documentation of employee interview and or performance improvement plan.
    • Meets with staff member to assess sustained improved behavior and/or re-establish consequences of continued inappropriate behavior.
    • Facilitates communications between employees in conflict seeking an immediate solution.
    • Maintains required written documentation of interview.
  • Evaluates learning needs of personnel based on demonstrated competencies, changing conditions of medical technology, advanced information technology, new processes or procedures and individual staff member's desire for professional advancement.
    • Addresses underperforming staff member with a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) to elevate to expected performance standards.
    • Works individually with staff member to address learning needs and establishes plan of action.
    • Assigns staff member to serve as preceptor for orientation or re-training of another staff member.
    • Meets regularly with staff member and preceptor (when applicable) to assess progress and evaluate progress.
    • Evaluates staff member's potential for success and/or initiates exit strategy for termination.
  • Monitors rate of completion of ongoing compliance activities in the Pre/Post areas, as found on the Concurrent Activity List: Quality control checks, emergency carts checks, surveillance by direct observation (hand hygiene, labeled medications), supply out dates, month end reports etc.
  • Monitors staff RN accuracy & timely completion rate of preference record edits to account for supply consumption.
  • Conducts performance appraisals of staff members in a timely manner with written appraisal and performance improvement:
    • Frequently meets with new hire to assess integration and progress, adjusts orientation schedule based on needs
    • Written introductory appraisal due within 90 days of hire
    • Written annual appraisal due during employee anniversary month, unless determined that everyone will have the same date/month annually
  • Reviews employee files for completeness of contents; obtains validation documents before expiration.
  • Assists with completion regarding timekeeping corrections to HR for timely submission of electronic payroll and retains record.


Department Management

  • Holds meeting frequently with the team, and provides updates to them, as needed. Also, assists in coordinating in-services and required training for staff
  • Participates in preparation of both short and long-term goals of the Center, either directed by the Administrator.
    • Determines plan, communicates functional plan to constituents to achieve goals and inspires staff members to accomplish goals set forth.
    • Allocates resources necessary to fulfill identified goals.
  • Possesses exceptional communication skills and supports the transparency of sharing information and keeping personnel informed and involved.
    • Recognizes privileged or protected information and applies discretion and confidentiality.
  • Possesses commitment to develop mutually supported professional relationships with physicians, peer group, ancillary personnel and industry partners.
  • Communicates directly with anesthesia providers for case coverage & incidental changes in case management.
  • Educates Center personnel in supply consumption, cost containment, product standardization and inventory management to improve Center profitability.
  • Maintains tasks identified on compliance concurrent activities checklist and provides verification of same to Administrator.
  • Recommends education/competency assessment for high risk, problem prone or new processes and collaborates with staff educator for annual training day activities.
  • Recognizes unexpected outcomes, advises staff members when reporting events and attends to timely completion of event reporting.
  • Identifies opportunities for Performance Improvement studies and directs the corrective action plan and assesses the effectiveness of resolution.
  • Manages grievances (patient, surgeon, and staff) as appropriate for the condition, forwarding to higher authority as necessary, and/or attains an acceptable resolution.
  • Participates in development of annual budget by submitting capital equipment requests based on recognized equipment, instrument or supply needs, work flow or recommended practice standards.
  • Collaborates with Administrator for the achievement of business goals.
  • Regularly holds and/or participates in staff meetings:
    • Schedules & posts notice of date & time
    • prepares agenda, obtains input from staff members
    • Composes written summary of meeting discussion and permanent filing.
  • May serve as Chair or participate as active Committee member:
    • ASC management team
    • Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement Committee
    • Medical Advisory Committee
    • Safety, Emergency Preparedness
