The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $34.13.
Remote/Hybrid eligibility: This is a 100% Campus-based position.

The Police Trainee is the non-sworn entry training classification in to the University of California Police Department. This position allows successful applicants to work for UCPD while attending the required POST Certified Law Enforcement Academy. Applicants selected as Police Trainees must successfully complete a CA-POST Accredited Basic Police Academy approved by the department.
During training, incumbents do not have police powers and are subject to all the policies and procedures of the University of California, the University of California Police Department and the police academy attended. Trainees may be assigned non-safety duties in the Police Department such as assisting in prevention, collecting information and data and transporting people and materials.
Upon successful completion of the academy, Police Trainees will be eligible to fill vacant Police Officer positions. Promotion to a sworn Police Officer position is contingent upon successful completion of the basic academy and the final review of the Police Chief. Upon promotion to Police Officer, the selected incumbent must successfully complete a Field Training Program (FTP) and a probationary period of no less than one year.
Under the supervision of a ranking UCM Police Supervisor, enroll and attend an approved Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) basic police academy to be trained in the technical knowledge, skills and physical capabilities required to perform police service.
The Basic Law Enforcement Academy is an intensive course that is best described as a college course with strict para-military discipline. Student attending the academy will be academic disciplined and have a structured environment. Recruits receive rigorous and challenging training in all phases of law enforcement. Prior to graduation, recruits must demonstrate acceptable proficiency in:
- Human relations
- Communications skills
- Problem solving
- Job knowledge
- Professional reasoning
- Physical fitness
- Firearms
- Emergency vehicle operations
- Arrest and control skills
- Scenario skills
- Report writting
