Job description
Join our Olympic Health and Recovery Services (OHRS) Jail Diversion team in a position that supports Mason County's Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) and Recovery Navigator programs focusing on community based case management and alternative to jail and prosecution.
Position Purpose
Serves as Peer Specialist within the Jail Diversion Team, providing harm reduction-based services to individuals who meet medical necessity for behavioral health treatment and are eligible for jail diversion. Services include administration, coordination and planning for services supporting individuals with various mental health, substance abuse and other related challenges as they are diverted from incarceration to the community.
Major Responsibilities
- Acts as a role model, mentor and ally to program participants under the supervision of a Mental Health Professional (MHP) employed by OHRS.
- Researches available community resources and provides coordination, support and advocacy services to program participants and their families facing a variety of challenges as they are diverted from jail into the community. These challenges may include a history of homelessness, chronic mental, behavioral or other health issues, legal challenges and/or substance abuse issues.
- Coordinates with program Substance Use Disorder Professionals (SUDPs), Mental Health Professionals (MHPs), law enforcement, corrections/hospital staff, community providers, and family/natural-supports to increase the likelihood of continued safety, health, and stability of the program participant.
- Provide harm reduction-based support and encouragement to program participants as an individual with lived experience in working toward a path of recovery to reduce the likelihood of being incarcerated or admitted to an inpatient hospital setting.
Salary Range: $23.33 - $30.89 hourly, based on education, experience, and parity within the organization.

Experience and Education
- Washington State certification as a Peer Counselor is required. If not already certified you must receive certification within 6 months of hire.
- Washington State licensure as an Agency Affiliated Counselor or equivalent is required. If not already licensed you must apply within 30 days of hire.
- Two (2) years working a peer counselor is preferred.
- Lived experience and/or experience working with individuals with substance use who are involved with the criminal justice system preferred.
- Must be able to pass required background checks as required by OHRS contractual requirements.
- Current Washington State Driver's License, and satisfactory drivers record, or have requested and obtained an appropriate accommodation.
- Ability to utilize a personal computer with applicable software to successfully perform essential job functions of the position including word processing, spread sheet, analysis, information retrieval, and tracking.
Skills and Abilities
- Familiarity and knowledge of best practices for alcohol/drug abuse treatment and prevention programs, mental health and developmental disabilities programs as well as with local social service agencies.
- Ability to establish and maintain trusting and supportive relationships as well as provide inspiration and motivation to individuals transitioning toward recovery.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and/or cultures.
- Ability to foster collaboration and teamwork with program participants, other staff, law enforcement, County Corrections Facility staff and outside agencies.
- Ability to accurately meet documentation requirements, in a timely fashion.
- Ability to respectfully manage differences, opposing perspectives, opinions and interests.
- Ability to remain flexible and adaptable to change.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams and Avatar electronic health record system.
Working Conditions
- Primarily works in the community in a variety of environments, to include but not limited to, Mason County jail, shelters, community-based facilities, individual’s homes, and in an office environment.
- Outreach to individuals who may be living in the community, sanctioned and non-sanctioned camps, and in shelters.
- Requires regular use of fleet vehicles and travels to a variety of community locations including county jails.
- Requires transportation of clients in fleet vehicle.
- Regular, on-site, predictable attendance required.
- May require availability to work flexible hours.
- Moderate physical exertion is required. May be required to walk up and down stairs and walk short distances on uneven terrain. May be required to lift or move boxes/equipment weighing up to 25 lbs.
