SUMMARY:
Parent Liaisons are critical to the long-term success of young people from birth through age 8, and their families. Parent Liaisons work across Washtenaw County, but predominantly in low-income neighborhoods of the east side of the county. The position of Parent Liaison oversees the work of the Great Start Parent Coalition (GSPC) which is part of the Great Start Collaborative, works to support parents and families and advocates for the voice of parents with young children to be included in the decision-making of education and community programs. The position of Parent Liaison plays an integral role in this by identifying and facilitating opportunities for family engagement activities; also integrates the Strengthening Families Protective Factors into the work of the GSPC.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to equity, social justice, and inclusion in all practices and position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates the ability to examine how his/her/their position (directly or indirectly) impacts educational inequities in student achievement outcomes.
  • Engages in reflection and ongoing learning and development on critical concepts and terms identified in the Washtenaw ISD Educational Equity Policy including concepts such as cultural proficiency, racial equity, and systemic and structural inequities.
  • Supports the WISD vision and mission to enhance achievement for all students.
  • Coordinates the GSPC, including planning and facilitating regular GSPC meetings and works with the Community Engagement Specialist to coordinate the work.
  • Develops productive relationships with community partners and families.
  • Develops, facilitates, and conducts local learning and professional development opportunities (such as the Parent Café leader training).
  • Creates the annual plan of work in conjunction with the GSPC members and Success By 6 Director.
  • Sets annual and quarterly goals for GSPC regarding membership and participation in the strategic plan.
  • Provides updates on GSPC activities to the Great Start Collaborative meetings.
  • Actively recruits, orients, and supports parent members of the GSPC, helping to meet the 20% parent membership requirement on the Success by 6 Great Start Collaborative.
  • Assures that the GSPC includes parent members who represent the diversity of the community.
  • Helps create and maintain communications tools (e.g. web page, fact sheet, social media, etc.).
  • Maintains open communication lines between GSPC parents, the Director, and Success by 6 Great Start Collaborative membership; implements a process for bringing parent input and feedback about the early childhood system to be used as part of decision making.
  • Maintains parent coalition records and data including agendas, and minutes of all parent coalition meeting and activities.
  • Provides mentoring to support the development of the new parent leaders in the GSPC and Parent Cafes.
  • Participates in community events and committees and GSC Action Teams based upon the approved work plan, desired goals & objectives.
  • Performs such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS[1]:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree (in Early Childhood, Social Work or related field); or 3 to 5 years of experience in related work required.
  • Knowledge of early childhood programs and related services (e.g. health, dental/oral health, mental health, human services, etc.).
  • Possess an understanding of the needs of low-income and marginalized families.
  • Excellent records management skills and practices.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent data management and assessment skills.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: mentoring or coaching, strategic planning, data integration and analysis, community outreach and fundraising.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Current valid driver’s license with proof of insurance required[2].

  • Ability to read, and interpret periodicals and professional articles..
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of educators, customers and the general public.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of a personal computer (PC) or MAC in a networked environment to utilize the Internet and other electronic communications mechanisms such as email, conferencing, bulletin boards, etc.
  • Knowledge of productivity applications such as Microsoft Office (word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software) and other technology to support efficient and effective office operation is required.
  • Ability to integrate technology into the everyday work flow is necessary.
  • Ability to implement new technologies.
  • Ability to follow data collection information to support goals. .

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to apply the concepts of basic math, algebra and geometry consistent with the duties of this position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, see and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision and the ability to adjust focus. Frequent travel and/or driving to various off-site locations is required. TERMS:
Contract, salary and other employment conditions to be established by the Board of Education as reflected in the Non-Affiliated/Non-Affiliated Early Childhood Manual. Starting salary range $24,667 - $30,316 (dependent upon experience).
