We are seeking a paralegal to join our Child Welfare team in District 10. This position will be located in Bend, Redmond, Prineville or Madras.

What you need to qualify:
Two year associate degree in paralegal or legal assistant studies.

OR
Eighteen months of paralegal experience.

OR
Any combination of training and experience that demonstrates experience in legal work, independent judgment, legal terminology principles, concepts, systems, and processes.
  • Experience must include discovery and trial methods and procedures, legal ethics and skill in preparing legal documents, interviewing witnesses and explaining legal issues.

  • Ability to gather data and effectively summarize it.
  • Ability to navigate technology and different computer systems.
  • Experience doing research and asking questions to understand policy and procedure.
  • Experience utilizing time management skills to meet mandated deadlines.

As a paralegal, you will be:
  • Assisting attorneys in preparing for and conducting court proceedings related to child welfare practice.
  • Reviewing agency files to determine sufficiency of exhibits and documentation.
  • Drafting statements of facts for memoranda or briefs.
  • Obtaining documents to prove allegations, reviewing/summarizing depositions, and preparing hearing notebooks.
  • Finding, interviewing, and assisting in preparation of witnesses.
  • Identifying and organizing exhibits and outlining questions to be asked at hearings.
  • Monitoring the progress of cases to ensure timely action.
  • Constructing and managing computerized litigation support databases for complex cases.
  • Drafting and reviewing documents for section attorneys that require legal expertise beyond routine clerical functions.
  • Analyzing and interpreting appropriate state, county, or federal rules of practice and procedure.
  • Providing technical assistance to new attorneys, paralegals, child welfare case workers/supervisors, and support staff; providing training on research methods.
Working conditions:
  • This position will be housed in an ODHS child welfare office.
  • Research is performed online, at law libraries, at the state library, and in the state archives.
  • This position may require regular travel and occasional overtime.
