Job description
Since being founded in 1815, Universitätsklinikum Erlangen has offered medicine of the highest standard and incorporated the latest insights from medical research and state-of-the-art equipment into diagnosis and therapy. More than 9,400 employees from approximately 50 different occupations are needed to provide the wide range of services offered by Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, ensuring our patients receive the very best care around the clock.
Open Positions for PhD Students (m/f/d) and a Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) in the Field of Infectious Disease Immunology
Within the Research Training Group (RTG) 2740 “ImmunoMicroTope” (Speaker: Prof. Christian Bogdan) funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the research group of PD Dr. Stefan Wirtz (Medical Department 1) is looking for 1 PhD student for the project “The regulatory role of fibroblastic reticular cells during intestinal bacterial infections”. The project aims to characterize signaling pathways in fibroblastic reticular cells controlling the structural dynamics and functional changes within lymphoid organs during infections with bacterial pathogens. This is to be achieved by in vivo infection models, advanced imaging techniques such as intravital- and light sheet microscopy as well as by next generation sequencing approaches.

The group of Dr. Christian Schwartz (Institute of Clinical Microbiology, Immunology and Hygiene) seeks for 1 PhD student and for 1 Postdoc within the project “ Obesity impairs antimicrobial responses and tissue repair” funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Obesity affects the composition of the intestinal microbiome, alters local and systemic immune responses and impairs tissue repair and wound healing. The primary goal of this project is to understand the molecular mechanisms of why obese patients exhibit compromised wound healing and tissue repair and are more susceptible to wound infections. Next generation sequencing, flow cytometric analyses, immunologic and microbiological methods are at the core of this research project.

The laboratory of PD Dr. Ulrike Schleicher and Prof. Christian Bogdan (Institute of Clinical Microbiology, Immunology and Hygiene) focuses on the activation and function of the innate immune system during infections with Leishmania parasites and offers 2 PhD positions. The two projects funded by the DFG aim to unravel (1) the role of innate lymphoid cells during the immune response in mouse and man and (2) the molecular mechanisms underlying the increased susceptibility to Leishmania infections in mice lacking the cytokine tumor necrosis factor. Both projects entail the use of RNA- and protein expression analyses, multicolor flow cytometry and confocal microscopy, bioinformatic analyses of single cell RNAseq data and metabolome analyses.
