Job Title: Oncology Nurse

Job Description Summary

Under the supervision of the Director, Programs & Quality Management, the Clinical Nurse Specialist - Oncology (Oncology Nurse) will be responsible for supporting the mission of the Department of Radiology/Oncology Services at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). The Oncology Nurse shall meet the qualifications for their specialty and perform functions within the scope of acceptable standards for their technical professional discipline.

Essential Responsibilities

The contracted Oncology-Registered Nurse will provide the following services and in strict compliance with standing orders and protocols set forth by the MTF, and IAW JC guidelines to include, but will not necessarily be limited to the following:

  • Assist in the case management of cancer patients such as scheduling appointments and referrals, vascular access, and orders as appropriate for laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy.
  • Schedule referrals to other clinics, treatment facilities and ancillary services for total patient care.
  • Assist in counseling and monitoring patients entering clinical trial protocols. Explain procedures and treatments to patients and significant others to allay apprehension and gain cooperation and support.
  • Obtain initial health history of cancer patients, including obtaining recent hospital summaries, pathology reports, operation records, laboratory, radiological, and pharmaceutical information related to patient encounters to screen for disease and surgically related problems.
  • Serve as intermediary for community resources to aid oncology patients and assist in providing ongoing patient education programs.
  • Provide information to institution or national headquarters on a routine basis for the follow up of patients on protocols.
  • Provide specialized nursing care to oncology patients as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Work productively as a part of a team of professionals to assess the effectiveness of existing programs and plan for providing further development of patient care programs.
  • Provide individual and family counseling for cancer patients.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, safe clinic environment by promoting safe practices in ongoing quality assurance.
  • Recognize emergencies and respond with appropriate protocol; e.g. resuscitation, oxygen, emergency drugs, cardiac massage, application of medical equipment and other, as established by the medical staff.
  • Provide education on radiation therapy treatments and effects to other nursing care providers and clinicians.
  • Administer cancer related therapies for the treatment of cancer and the prevention of radiation side effects.

Qualifications

  • Shall be able to read, write, speak and understand English well enough to effectively communicate with all patients and other health care providers.
  • Shall be knowledgeable of equipment and supply terminology and skill sufficient to identify and use necessary equipment and supplies properly and to communicate proper use with nurses, medical staff, patients, and family members.
  • Shall be sufficiently skilled to teach patients proper self-care and to motivate patients and family members to continue the procedures for promoting rapid healing.
  • Shall be knowledgeable and possess skills necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients.
  • Shall demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the patient population served: Infants, Children, Adolescent, Adults, and Geriatric (>65).
  • Assess, coordinate, facilitate, deliver and evaluate care for infant to geriatric patients using the nursing process.
  • Assess, coordinate, facilitate, deliver and evaluate care for infant to geriatric patients.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of medical disorders/conditions, diagnostic studies and treatments related to prevention, and detection of illnesses in adults, is desirable.
  • Shall be knowledgeable in professional care theories, principles, practices, and procedures to perform duties.
  • Knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in the use of basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records.
  • Ability to work independently, with a sense of urgency, prioritizing work responsibilities within a fast-paced organization, with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Customer Service driven towards all external and internal customers.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship skills and the ability to work in a professional manner with individuals throughout all levels of the organization.

Required Education and Experience

  • The Oncology Nurse shall possess a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree or Master’s degree in Nursing.
  • Possess a current Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification.
  • Certifications required in addition to Basic Life Support: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Possess current certification as a Clinical/Medical Dosimetrist.
  • Possess a minimum of three (3) years of RN experience within the preceding five (5) years with experience in Radiation Oncology
  • Licensure/Registration: Possess a current, unrestricted license to practice nursing in any one of the fifty States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands. Certifications must be updated annually.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position / Onsite at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC)

Core Hours: 7:00am – 5:00pm, Monday – Friday

Travel

Little to no travel is expected for this position.
