Office Assistant 1 (Stores/Mail)

Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service standards and specifications. Must have taken and passed the specific job related Civil Service exam and be reachable on the appropriate Civil Service list. The Civil Service list for this position might provide insufficient acceptors, therefore, a provisional appointment may be made. Any provisional appointee will be required to take, pass and be reachable on the next Civil Service examination to be permanently appointed. 70.1 Transfers are encouraged to apply. 70.1 Transfer Candidates must have been appointed from a Civil Service List and have served permanently in an appropriate title(s) for one year. Transfers must be within two salary grades. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. (***Out-of-State Applicants, see "Special Notes”). Candidate must be able to perform the physical tasks of the position such as bending, lifting, stretching and climbing. Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor with the ability to move heavy objects, up to 50 lbs.

Brief Description of Duties: Performs clerical and manual activities in support of the residential mail rooms. Duties to include the following:

  • Sorts and delivers incoming U.S. Postal Service, private carrier packages and mail, and intra-campus mail. Picks up and delivers inter-office, inter-agency, and U.S. Postal mail on a scheduled mail route, at quads. (Packages must be taken off mail trucks and/or removed from piles of other packages. Mail truck is used for delivery, but in many cases, it must be delivered by traveling to numerous other locations, inaccessible by truck. Pallet jacks are sometimes utilized.)
  • Perform clerical support and customer service to customers at the four residential mail rooms. Operates computer in processing mail and reproducing printed material.
  • Maintains records of incoming and outgoing accountable mail.
  • Interacts with staff, and students; assists them with questions and problems. Incumbent will work in a team environment.
  • Other duties as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 37.5 hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
