GENERAL SUMMARYWorks under the supervision of the Nurse. The Nursing Assistant’s primary job function is to perform a variety of basic patient care activities in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients. Supports each Strategic Value by providing excellent care to those we serve. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required

Completion of an approved nursing assistant program or equivalent experience required

Licensure:

BLS within 90 days of hire required

Interpersonal Skills:

Good interpersonal skills needed in dealing with nursing staff, physicians/providers, patients, families, and other members of the health care team.

Essential Technical/Motor Skills:

Hand/eye coordination to perform basic patient care activities.

Essential Physical Requirements:
-
The physical demand is heavy.
-
Occasionally lifts in excess of 100 pounds and frequently lifts 50-100 pounds when transferring and positioning patients.

Stands or walks with regular breaks for greater than 50% of the shift when providing supportive services and basic nursing procedures.
-
Sits for one to three hours per shift when documenting patient care.
-
Ability to use hands for repetitive simple grasping, fine manipulation, and pushing and pulling when attending to a patient's physical needs, operating patient care equipment, and assisting patients with personal hygiene.

Occasionally bends, squats, climbs, crawls, and reaches above shoulder level.

Essential Mental Requirements:

Has occasional contact with the general public and customer when relating to patients' families and customers when performing nursing care.

Must be able to cope when occasionally working under close supervision and without the assistance of other personnel.

Requires the ability to occasionally adapt to deadlines and irregular activity schedules and pay close attention to detail

Essential Sensory Requirements:

Good vision is required when performing job duties such as taking temperatures and weights, feeding and ambulating patients, and observing patients.

The ability to communicate clearly is continuously required when interacting with patients, visitors, physicians/providers, and reporting to team leader/charge nurse the treatment results, observations, patient complaints, and other pertinent information regarding the condition of the patient.

Exposure to Hazards:

Normal patient care environment with occasional exposure to dust and odors.

Occasional exposure to body fluids, unpleasant patient care activities, infectious diseases, and toxic substances due to the performance of certain patient care activities.

Sharp instruments and moving machinery are occasionally used in attending to patient needs.

Frequently exposed to noise due to job requirements.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
- Performs basic patient care activities.
- Observes patients and reports unusual conditions and/or reactions to the nurse.
- Assists with admissions, discharges, and transfers of patients.
- Answers call lights and responds to patient needs.
- Maintains patient environment and performs routine cleaning tasks in nursing unit/patient rooms.
- Documents according to policy.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
