The position involves welcoming visitors and interpreting the natural wonders of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument (NNMV) at Lava Lands, Lava River Cave, and sites in the Newberry Caldera. Working at NNVM is an opportunity to learn about and explore this volcanic landscape's fantastic diversity of features. Two lakes, a rushing creek and the Deschutes River, provide a watery counterpoint to the lava flows, pumice plains, and diverse forests on Newberry Volcano. With over 300,000 visitors each year, this role has a high degree of visitor contacts, answering questions about the Monument and surrounding area, and includes working inside a Visitor Center and outside at several notable volcanic features.

Duties also include:

· selling recreation passes, assisting with bookstore duties, and tracking visitation

· facilitating a timed reservation system on Recreation.gov

· developing interpretive programs to share the stories of the Monument with the public—short talks, guided walks, and informal roving

· communicating effectively with visitors about Monument regulations and safety

· working as a uniformed employee with Forest Service staff and volunteers

An ideal candidate enjoys talking to visitors in small and large groups in formal or informal settings and has a passion for the natural world and cultural history of Central Oregon, including the geology of Newberry Volcano. Outside conditions range from snow and hail to heat and sometimes smoke. Position may require foot travel of two miles over uneven terrain or in poor light conditions underground in Lava River Cave.
