Bay Transit is seeking part time drivers for the New Freedom Program for the West Point, VA route. Excellent driving records and customer service skills needed. You must have a valid Virginia driver’s license for at least one year; high school diploma or GED required; be at least twenty-one years of age and working knowledge of electronic tablets and 2-way radios; occupational hazards and safety precautions when working vehicles and transporting passengers. Must have the ability to operate a 12-passenger transit bus safely; read a map; interact with passengers in a courteous manner; handle small amounts of cash accurately and responsibly; work a flexible schedule Monday-Friday with occasional night and weekend work. Pay rate is $15.00/hr.


JOB SUMMARY:

Ensure all Bay Transit passengers have a safe and timely ride to meet their transportation needs to work, retail, medical, legal, educational or recreational facilities. Reports to the Regional Transit Operations Supervisor.The New Freedom Mobility Management program provides transportation for individuals with disabilities and seniors age 65 and older to locations outside of Bay Transit’s service area and outside of service hours. This includes medical appointments to regional hospitals in surrounding cities (i.e. Richmond, Fredericksburg, Newport News, and Williamsburg).


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Drives bus to transport passengers over specified routes to local or distant points according to a time schedule while providing safe and courteous service to the public.

  • Maintaining a clean and safe environment for passengers, including regularly cleaning the interior of the vehicle and keeping an inventory of emergency supplies such as first aid kits and fire extinguishers.
  • Provides high level of service while operating bus under a variety of conditions and ensuring that all passengers are comfortable with the rules of conduct on the vehicle.
  • Performing safety checks on vehicles before operating them.
  • Reporting any mechanical problems with vehicles to the appropriate staff member.
  • Collecting fares from passengers and maintaining accurate records of all fares collected.
  • Transporting passengers to their destinations in a safe and courteous manner, while maintaining the transport schedule and complying with local traffic regulations.
  • Helping passengers with disabilities board the vehicle safely and securely.
  • Maintains a professional appearance.
  • Responsible for effectively dealing with difficult customers and situations.
  • Effectively communicates with dispatch regarding any changes to the transport schedule, reports delays or accidents.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively by using both written and verbal skills.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
  • 20/20 vision or corrected lenses required.
  • Infrequent lifting and twisting required.
  • Must be able to bend to secure wheelchairs in the vehicle.
  • Must be able to work in all changes in weather conditions.
