Responsible for running daily Camp Backcountry activities and lessons.

Supervision Received: Works under the direction of the Backcountry Wilderness Area Camp Director and the other Backcountry Wilderness Area staff.

Supervision Exercised: None.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following examples of duties are intended to be illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise up to 16 children each day
  • Plan, develop, and teach age appropriate lessons based upon each weekly theme including, but not limited, to forest ecology, high desert ecology, geology, entomology, and wilderness survival skills
  • Implement education, fun, and age appropriate outdoor activities and games
  • Lead exploratory hikes
  • Actively interact with and engage campers during all Camp Backcountry programs
  • Supervise and participate in programs led by outside contractors
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety and follow all associated camp policies
  • Follow all Camp Backcountry policies when checking campers in and out for the day
  • Take and submit pictures and videos each week to the Outreach Coordinator to reflect the experience campers have at Camp Backcountry
  • Set up each morning before campers arrive and clean up after campers depart each afternoon
  • Work in a team environment with all Backcountry Wilderness Area staff and other Camp Backcountry counselors to accomplish program goals
  • Maintain a positive attitude during all activities and in all weather conditions and situations
  • Attend all staff meetings as required
  • Respond to emergency situations
  • Follow all established camp policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned and required
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have an interest in, respect for, and ability to work with children
  • Have a passion for nature and outdoor recreation
  • Ability to adapt lesson plans and instructions to meet a wide variety of learners
  • Knowledge of basic ecological principals and environmental issues
  • Ability to supervise and be responsible for the health and safety of up to 16 children each day
  • Strong work ethic and motivation to contribute positively to the Backcountry Wilderness Area at large
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with people of all backgrounds
  • Ability to work in a busy environment with distractions
  • Current First Aid/CPR certifications required, or ability to obtain before first day of employment
  • Previous childcare experience preferred. Candidates with prior childcare experience will be asked to provide verification of up to 1,040 hours of experience working with school-aged children.
  • Valid drivers license and clean driving record for those age 21 years and older. Applicants 25 years of age or older will be required to drive the 15 passenger camp vans.
  • Must pass a Drug and Background check

Salary: $15.00-28.00/hour depending on qualifications and experience
