Duties
- Independently work in a Fire Warehouse to support the district as well as the fire and aviation operations. Responsible for ordering, receiving, maintaining, and shipping firefighting equipment and supplies in time of fire or other emergent needs.
- Order and purchase supplies from various approved sources in order to support ongoing incidents as well as maintaining day-to-day preparedness for the Fire Program.
- Receive supplies into the local fire cache and ensuring accountability for locally controlled or system controlled property.
- Maintain inventories within the Fire Cache to set stocking levels and ensuring accurate account of supplies and property.
- Ship supplies to incidents or other caches to support incident operations or post-incident recovery of supplies.
- Refurbish supplies and firefighting equipment to established standards after being used.

Qualifications
OPM Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations will be used in determining your qualifications. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials, that you possess the skill level that has equipped you with the particular job elements to successfully perform the duties of Materials Handler without more than normal supervision. No assumptions will be made about your experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Material handlers are often required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time, and to bend, stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. They may lift and carry items that weigh up to 8 kilograms (40 pounds). The heavier items are moved with weight handling equipment or with assistance from other works. The incumbent's work requires standing, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May be required to work at a rapid pace for long period of time. During period of high fire activity, the incumbent may be required to work for periods of time of up to 21 days without days off. Frequently lifts and carries supplies, equipment, and printed materials that may weigh up to 40 pounds on a recurring basis. The heavier items are moved with weight-handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Work is generally performed on a concrete or hard surface floor.
Work Environment: Work is done inside or outside in areas that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted. Materials handlers are regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock or mechanized work areas. When working hazardous materials areas, they may be subject to exposure from radiation, toxins, explosive hazards, or chemical fumes. Work may require wearing protective clothing such as hardhats, steel-toed shoes, rubber gloves, masks, and rubber aprons. Incumbent works in both inside and outside areas. Warehousing is done in areas that are hot, cold, dry, wet, drafty, and poorly lighted. The work is dirty, dusty, and greasy. The incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, and the safety hazards inherent of warehousing.
Education
There is no education required for this position. There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade positions.
Additional information
This is a career seasonal position. You will be in pay status for at least 6 months, but less than 12 months per calendar year. When work and/or funds are unavailable, you will be placed into non-pay status. Pay status may be less than 6 months during initial appointment.
Relocation/Recruitment Incentive: This position is offering a Relocation/Recruitment Incentive, 25% of the annual salary. To be eligible for a Relocation Incentive, you must be a current Federal Employee and the selectee must be employed with the Federal Government and the selectees current duty location is more than 50 miles from the duty location of this position. To be eligible for a Recruitment Incentive, selectee must not be employed by the Federal Government.
