MATERIAL HANDLER
Job description
The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (OH) seeks a Material Handler for the Technical Services Department. Material Handlers focus on moving materials for circulation. They sort and move materials associated with internal delivery, consortium delivery, and vendor delivery, and maintain scalable workflow initiatives to reduce backlogs. Material Handlers receive specific direction and training regarding all aspects of the position and then are able to carry out tasks with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities. (1) Sorts and routes internal library delivery. Pack and unpack internal delivery and external vendor delivery in bins/boxes. Unpacks and sorts incoming library materials from vendors as necessary. (2) Assists and receives items from library consortium partner (Search Ohio/OhioLink) and prepares them for delivery to branch patrons. Assists with PLYMC returns to library consortium partner (Search Ohio/OhioLink). (3) Sorts, opens and routes mail. (4) Answers telephone calls. (5) Provides assistance to other technical services divisions as needed; including some material processing tasks.
Qualifications. High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Demonstrated use of Office software (Windows environment). Demonstrated resourcefulness to achieve departmental goals. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other library departments. Demonstrated commitment to quality customer service. Nature of work requires an ability to effectively communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents and operate standard business office equipment. Ability to work harmoniously with other staff members, to follow assigned work schedule, policies and procedures, and to maintain a positive attitude and a dependable attendance record.
Physical Requirements. Majority of work is performed in a general office / library environment. Able to reach, bend, climb, squat, lift 40lbs, push up to 50lbs, tolerate glue-like scents, load and unload materials, and stand and sit for long periods of time. Ability to reach high and low.
Work Schedule. Must be able to work 16 hours per week in the Technical Services department at the Newport branch library, typically 2 days per week for 8 hours each. Travel to other library branches required occasionally. Availability for extended or non-traditional hours as needed to perform job duties. Participation and attendance at promotional events and off-site meetings may be required at management’s discretion.
Compensation. The pay rate for this position starts at $15.00 per hour and includes a pension plan with the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS).
