- As a Manager, this position is responsible for:
- Participating and contributing in setting energy and resource conservation goals and standards and making decisions that help guide Mesa County Valley School District 51 (MCVSD 51) toward its near-term and long-term future;
- Supporting the District’s Strategic Initiatives for students by supporting the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics STEM/STEAM programs. Cooperatively resolving current energy and resource issues of major significance that will have a bearing on the programs and people of MCVSD 51 as assigned;
- Being decisive in taking and communicating appropriate remedial action when performance and behavior is not consistent with targets;
- Sharing information and developing a collective understanding of appropriate programs and issues;
- Overseeing the monitoring, reporting and application of energy and resource management for all D51 Schools and supporting facilities is one of the primary responsibilities for this position. Energy and resources monitored and managed by this position include natural gas, electricity, and water. Employee uses a wide variety of equipment to perform energy-consuming equipment audits to analyze the functionality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of various uses of energy and resources for the District. In addition, this role oversees each building’s HVAC needs for “off-hours” scheduling allowing for climate controls that match the season/current environment.
- Responsibilities under resource management duties includes collecting and maintaining comprehensive facilities data on all district buildings. Reporting includes a wide array of data points including for instance, square footage, energy usage, and building conditional assessments. Employee provides data analysis, regular reporting and makes recommendations that allows for district level capital project planning, regular maintenance scheduling, and for instance, mechanical/HVAC replacements. Facilities Condition Assessments databases are maintained in the district’s Energy Management software and allow for both short-term and long-term planning.
- Communicating with Colorado Energy Office (CEO), this position is responsible for ensuring that School District 51’s current and new energy and resource consumption processes continue to improve conservation efforts and cut District costs. Communication includes learning and implementing best practices for energy and resource conservation efforts such as the use of renewable energy, which will allow the District to provide more comfortable and safe learning environments for students and employees. Working with nearly all area utilities providers this role also oversees monthly billings and invoice management. Employee works closely with the Department Administrative Assistant to ensure monthly invoices are processed and any discrepancies are resolved. This position also works with the Public Utilities Commission to receive necessary permits for energy sources and to verify the utility and legal compliance of current and future energy and resource conservation efforts to implement the use of more efficient energy and resource uses and sources.
- In collaboration with classroom Teachers this employee will develop presentations and actively participate in students’ exploration of hydrology, solar energy, recycling, energy conservation and other related topics. Employee develops a calendar of weekly site visits coordinating topics with current curriculum and district programming. Supporting Strategic Initiatives for student learning this District role works to show “real life” STEM/STEAM applications and career opportunities.
- Using data collected during audits and technical knowledge of energy-consuming equipment, this position will generate new processes, equipment, and alternative energy and resource uses that will help the District meet its fiduciary responsibilities as it strives to conserve energy and financial resources. The employee will coordinate with the District’s current energy provider and building leaders to implement new processes, equipment, and energy sources. This includes communicating recommendations and necessary steps for energy and resource conservation efforts for future building renovations and/or new buildings.
- Promoting student and staff knowledge of and participation in energy and resource conservation efforts through various trainings and implementation of energy, resource, and cost-saving programs across the District is a role performed by the Resource and Conservation Manager. The employee is responsible for bringing awareness to energy and resource conservation issues and will communicate the District’s efforts toward energy and resource conservation such as recycling or waste minimization efforts. Special projects and other duties may be assigned by District 51 Superintendent as needed.
- Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction or Business Management, or other related field*;
- Minimum three years of experience in energy management, construction, maintenance, or other related field required;
- Criminal Background Check required at time of hire;
- Valid Colorado driver’s license or other form of identification required;
- Certified Energy Manager per the Association of Energy Engineers required within one year of employment;
- Attend and successfully complete all staff development training as required by state law or as directed by supervisor.

- Operating knowledge of and experience with energy-consuming audit equipment, which may include but is not limited to power meters, thermometers, tunable ultrasonic receivers, and mini data loggers;
- Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals;
- Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, etc.;
- Operating knowledge of and experience with software programs for word processing, spreadsheets, and email;
- Operating knowledge of and experience with building automation systems, HVAC automation systems, and utility bill payment systems.

SUMMARY : Operating under the general direction of the Director of Maintenance and Operations, this position oversees the monitoring of current energy and resource use through the operation and management of energy auditing equipment and technical knowledge to improve the District’s energy and resource conservation efforts. The conservation efforts developed and implemented by this position may include the use of alternative energy sources and recycle and reuse programs, which will improve the energy efficiency at approximately 45 locations while cutting district-wide costs. This position will also use interpersonal communication skills to promote the use of conservation programs throughout School District 51 to increase the use of energy and resource conservation efforts as the District strives to become a community leader in environmental resource conservation and awareness. The Energy and Resource Conservation Manager plays a vital role in creating a safe and comfortable environment in which students may learn more effectively.

BUDGET AND/OR RESOURCE RESPONSIBILITY : This position is responsible for assisting the Director of Maintenance in the development of the District 51 energy and resource consumption utility budget. Detailed analysis of current District-wide energy and resource consumption along with technical knowledge will help the employee recommend budget changes and details. Such details may include budget requirements for new construction projects regarding efficient and effective energy consumption as well as requirements for new alternative energy sources such as implementation of solar energy.
