Position Summary

Provides direct supervision of supervisory personnel. Ensures standard operating procedures are current and accurate and that occupational safety procedures are observed. Recommends personnel actions to include hiring, training, promotion, and discipline. May have responsibility for facilities management and planning.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage approximately 40 direct and indirect reports, including interviewing, on-the-job training, performance management and evaluation, career development discussions, and oversight of employee work schedules and attendance. Inventory management and control to ensure adequate stock levels. Plan, direct, supervise and coordinate the daily activities of the supervisors and staff in campus-wide cage wash operations. Monitor and prioritize the processing of caging and support equipment to meet program demand.
  • Coordination of preventive maintenance and sanitizing schedules within the facilities and for associated equipment to assure they are in compliance with government regulations and standard operating procedures and policies. Train staff on cage wash operations focusing on safety, perform routine safety checks to prevent safety hazards from occurring, and monitor daily operations.
  • Coordinate employee participation in OSHA Hearing Conservation Program. Maintain records to allow accurate reporting for regulatory compliance.
  • Manage personnel and supply budget; ensure optimal availability of supplies and equipment for use in the efficient operation of the animal research facilities cage wash areas.
  • Communicate effectively with research technicians, animal users, principal investigators/faculty, Facilities Maintenance, and EHS to assure safe and smooth operation of the animal facility cage wash area.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • At least six years of supervisory experience in a research animal facility, or relevant experience in allied field such as hospital laundries, sterile instrument processing, or commercial sanitation enterprises.
  • Previous experience in an operational leadership role with project management.
  • CMAR certification by AALAS.
  • Ability to understand regulations regarding research animals and safety.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work for themselves and their staff.
  • Proficiency with computers including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to extract, evaluate, and utilize data from various information sources for process improvement.
  • Proactive leader who demonstrates a thorough understanding of commercial machinery and is able to implement appropriate processes accordingly.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree plus six years of relevant experience in university, hospital or large corporate/industrial complex; or equivalent combination of education and experience totaling ten years, with at least three years of relevant experience at the supervisory or managerial level.
  • Experience should include line responsibility for technical personnel.
