At Forest Lawn, Glendale, our Bronze & Marble team is seeking a Maintenance Worker 1. This position is responsible for performing entry-level, crypt-side and niche-side funeral services within sarcophagi, in/ under floor vaults, wall crypts, and niche banks located in outdoor gardens and inside facilities such as mausoleums.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
Analyze simple drawings, specifications, oral instructions and general requirements to determine the scope of work.- Consult directly with supervisor to organize, plan, and discuss the methods, tools, and materials required for each assignment.
- Assist visitors as needed.
- Place and/or remove floral arrangements in vases on a routine basis including holidays and special occasions.
- Check and report repairs needed to facilities found during the course of the day, such as water leaks, burned out bulbs, clogged drains, or damage to walkways, walls, ceilings, handrails, floors, doors, windows, stain glass, locks, or other miscellaneous items and report them to supervisor.
- Review the service sheet to determine if there are any scheduled crypt-side and/or niche-side funeral services coming up. Double check the service sheet each morning for funeral services possibly added.
- Routinely check the Interment Order of upcoming services and verify that the (3) required approvals are present prior to opening a space.
- Assist with the removing marble or granite niche or crypt fronts, and/or panel from under floor, sarcophagi, niche banks, and/or wall crypts, clean all interior surfaces, and remove any remaining internal vent plugs or caps.
- For under floor and sarcophagi vaults: assist with setup and anchoring of a casket-lowering device inside of the crypt and manually lower each casket into the proper space.
- For wall crypts and niche banks: assist with setup of a casket-lift, raising of the casket or urn to the appropriate height, and manually placing each casket or urn into the proper space.
- Install a temporary spring-loaded rod with drapery onto the front of the wall crypt and/or niche opening to prepare for the funeral service.
- Set up all required chairs and/or tables for the family members and clergy.
- After the funeral service: remove the drapery, install a concrete lid to seal the opening of the space and secure it using wood wedges. Encapsulate the concrete lid into place using cement.
- Assist with drilling and installing cutout letters and/or vase buttons in the marble or granite niche or crypt fronts and/or sarcophagi panel as required prior to reinstallation.
- Assist with reinstalling marble or granite niche or crypt fronts and/or sarcophagi panel using stainless steel pins and/or latch spring pins and properly align all joints.
- Apply grout or caulking to seal the marble niche or crypt front and/or sarcophagi panel.
- Occasionally assist with the assembly and installation of statues, mosaics, wall plaques, sarcophagi, benches, vases, etc.
- Transport material and equipment to the job site or arrange for transport of heavy or bulky items.
- Maintain simple records and time reports.
- Work directly and/or indirectly with vendors and contractors to resolve technical problems and to give assistance as required.
- Continue education and skill development to ensure that technical ability is compatible to current requirements.
- Keep informed on all new technologies and procedures related with job functions.
- Keep shop and work areas in clean and orderly condition.
- Lock out and block out all unsafe or incomplete work areas.
- Occasionally perform work at outside parks such as at Cathedral City, which may include staying for several days at a time.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

Valid CA Driver License

Minimum of 6 months maintenance experience.

Ability to lift 100 pounds.

Ability to learn all duties of the position and safety precautions.

Demonstrate tact and diplomacy when dealing with team members and internal customers.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those in contact throughout the course of the duties.
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS
-
Previous Cemetery/Mortuary experience.
-
Some specialized training and practical/hands-on experience in niche side and crypt-side funeral services.
