Maintenance
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Installs, repairs, rebuilds and services mechanical or electrical locking devices using hand tools and special equipment under general supervision. Applies the principles and practices of the locksmith trade to a variety of locks and to resolve lock malfunctions. Reports to Maintenance Supervisor III - General.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Disassembles locks.
  • Diagnoses operational problems in locks.
  • Repairs or replaces worn tumblers, springs, and other parts.
  • Inserts new or repaired tumblers into the lock to change the combination.
  • Follows specification for the installation of complex systems.
  • Makes measurements and cuts materials to exact specification for placement of locks.
  • Inserts locks.
  • Secures locks by installing holding hardware.
  • Maintains a set of master keys for the school system.
  • Cuts blanks to duplicate keys.
  • Utilizes knowledge of ADA and Fire Safety Codes in all work done.
  • Keeps inventory of materials, orders needed materials, and works with vendors in procuring the materials.
  • Reads and maintains key bitting.
  • Maintains accurate records of key descriptions.
  • Utilizes carpentry skills as necessary.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Receives training and inservice pertinent to the job function.
Performs other functions as assigned by the supervisor.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Considerable and progressively complex experience in the locksmith trade. May also be required to be bonded as required by the State of North Carolina. Must hold an appropriate North Carolina Driver's License for the weight and type of vehicle operated as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Must hold valid N.C. state driver's license.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to stoop, kneel, walk, crawl, lift, work in awkward positions and enclosed places. Must be physically able to drive a car. Must be able to lift and carry items weighing 75 pounds. Physical demand requirements are for heavy work. Must work inside and outside as required. May be subject to high dust areas, inadequate lighting areas, high moisture and wet areas, maintenance and cleaning chemicals, and extreme hot and cold areas.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read simple forms. Requires the ability to prepare time sheets and supply requisitions using prescribed format.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add, subtract, divide and multiply.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes to accomplish maintenance tasks.
Manual Dexterity: Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress.
Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk, see, and hear.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of the locksmith trade.
  • Skill in the use of the tools of the trade.
  • Skill in making the precise adjustments to parts of locks.
  • Ability to work to close tolerances.
  • Ability to modify instructions to fit the situation.
  • Must have considerable knowledge of ADA and Fire Safety Codes.
  • Must have good communication with vendors.
  • Must have knowledge of materials on hand and materials to be ordered.
  • Must be able to read and maintain key bitting.
  • Must be able to maintain accurate records of key descriptions.
  • Considerable knowledge of the carpentry trade.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments.
