The North Dakota Insurance Department is a state agency with the primary role of regulating the insurance industry in the State of North Dakota. Additionally, the department provides consumer protection and assistance services to help consumers navigate the coverage and benefits within their insurance policies.

Summary of Work


This position works as part of a small team to provide timely service to the insurance industry. This position is required to report to the state capital building and be able to work in a team enviroment.

Successful candidates must be able to confidently provide crucial information to agents, agencies, and companies to assist them in following all North Dakota requirements for licensing. Applicants must be flexible, able to learn new skills, willing to manage multiple tasks at one time, and provide appropriate customer service which is often over the phone.

Additional responsibilities include but aren't limited to:

  • Provide direct written and verbal consumer assistance to insurance agents and company representatives on license applications and renewals.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of all applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical information on licensing laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in person, by phone, or by correspondence.
  • Issue and renew individual and agency licenses and registration.
  • Review forms, supporting documentation, and other records to ensure that required information is provided and authentic.
  • Evaluate information obtained and determine applicant eligibility for license, renewal or reinstatement.
  • Question applicants and conduct research to obtain required information.
  • Conduct and decipher required record checks.
  • Issue notices of requirements, suspension, revocation, etc.
  • Ensure accuracy of fees and payments.
  • Maintain applicant files and other records; prepare reports, correspondence, or letters as necessary.
  • Operate related computer systems and update databases.
  • Work on team to implement policy changes.
  • Participate in national discussions on the uniformity of agent licensing across states and maintaining the national database.
  • Participate in other Department teams to complete specific projects.

Minimum Qualifications


Requires a high school diploma or GED and three years of work experience performing a variety of complex administrative support or customer service duties. Related college-level course work may be substituted for up to two years of the work experience requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Preference will be given to Insurance related work experience.
