Nevada Copper (TSX:NCU) is a copper producer and owner of the Pumpkin Hollow copper project. Located in Nevada, USA, Pumpkin Hollow has substantial reserves and resources including copper, gold, and silver. Its two fully permitted projects include the high-grade underground mine and processing facility, which is now in the production stage, and a large-scale open pit project, which is advancing towards feasibility status.

Purpose of the Position:

The Metallurgical Lab Technician will be responsible for working with Process Operations to collect production samples, and prepare the samples for testing, analyze the samples, and report the results. Work practices must comply with local government and statutory requirements, in addition to company safety, health and environmental standards and procedures.

Accountability:

The Metallurgical Lab Technician will work on a rotating shift and report directly to the Senior/Chief Metallurgist with indirect reporting to the Mill Operations Supervisor and a contracted Analytical Supervisor who will support on-site training, fine tuning and follow-up on analytical equipment, procedures, and quality assurance/quality control.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to safety by maintaining a clean work area and ensuring that unsafe work practices are avoided through regular communication.
  • Consistently strive to complete assigned work through the safe and effective operation of equipment with a willingness to learn and implement new technology and approaches to maximize performance.
  • Maintain communication with Control Room and area operators as required to achieve consistent performance.
  • Work with the Senior / Chief Metallurgist to obtain calibration samples for the site On Stream Analyzer following defined procedures and protocols.
  • Be proficient with the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, XRF Analyzer, and Unconfined Compressive Strength analyzer, and other laboratory equipment as required.
  • Going to the plant to collect and prepare samples on sampling sites or back in the laboratory.
  • Compare sample to standard model to quickly assess basic quality of sample.
  • Perform a variety of metallurgical tests including flotation tests, settling test, wet screens, filter press, ro-tap, pulverization.
  • Ensure sampling machinery and tools are clean and in a workable condition, making any necessary repairs.
  • Perform routine tests, such as paste slump tests, slurry density checks, sieve analysis, and measuring pH.
  • Record sample data and enter a document or spreadsheet.
  • Define and communicate work requiring follow up by others with respect to unsafe work conditions or conditions that may limit productivity.
  • Inspect the work area and ensure that operating report sheets are neatly written, that operational checks are thorough, and operating practices comply with company safety and environmental requirements.
  • Promote a work environment that embraces discussion, change, innovation, and problem solving.

Health and Safety:

  • Ensure that all safety procedures and regulatory guidelines are followed
  • Pay close attention to work practices and handling of acids, cement, and pozzolan which are associated with sample preparation and analysis
  • Support the site safety culture through leadership and regularly engaging with and holding the workforce accountable for safe work practices
  • Participate in health and safety meetings and risk reviews as required

Knowledge/Education:

The incumbent must be technically proficient with the following attributes:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • A minimum of 2 years experience working in a lab environment prepping samples and operating an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer
  • XRF Analyzer training and experience preferred
  • Unconfined Compressive Strength analyzer experience preferred
  • Exhibit a passion for innovative concepts that can transform the business
  • Must be able to pass a Nevada Copper certification test to confirm, following a period of training, an understanding of safety and operational concepts and requirements for the position

The incumbent must demonstrate the following skills:

  • Must demonstrate the ability to proficiently operate an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and preferably an XRF Analyzer
  • Capable of completing assigned tasks with a high level of precision, care and attention
  • Must demonstrate a willingness to learn, to listen and to follow through on training which will include taking samples, sample preparation, filtering and analytical procedures
  • Able to work independently and communicate effectively with others
  • Capable and willing to train others as appropriate on the requirements of the position

Physical Demands:

The incumbent must demonstrate the following physical demands:

  • Operate a vehicle with a valid driver s license
  • Climb stairwells and be capable of working on elevated platforms
  • Walk on uneven ground
  • Periodically work in adverse weather conditions
  • Lift and potentially carry up to 50 - 70 lbs.
  • Sit for extended periods of time
  • Stay alert during periods of inactivity
  • Work independently on a rotating day shift/night shif

Work Schedule and Personal Protective Equipment:

The incumbent is expected to work on a rotating 12-hour day shift/night shift schedule. Personal Protective Equipment required for the field work portion of this position includes, but is not limited to, hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots. All equipment must be MSHA approved as applicable.
