Job Description Summary
The laboratory assistant supports the teaching of general or organic chemistry labs under the supervision of the lab coordinator and department chair. The laboratory assistant teaches during the lab period, grades laboratory assignments and interacts with students through office hours. The laboratory assistant will maintain and foster a culture of safety in the chemistry teaching laboratories. This position is classified as part-time and is scheduled to start on August 15, 2023 and end on May 15, 2024.
Job Description
Essential Functions:
  • Assists teaching 4 chemistry labs (Introductory Chemistry and Organic Chemistry) per semester and 1 per summer term, under the direction of the Laboratory Coordinator for specific courses.
  • Grades laboratory reports.
  • Assists Laboratory Coordinator in the preparation of weekly course laboratories.
  • Holds weekly office hours for students.
  • Follows and monitors safety protocols for a safe laboratory environment during classes.
  • Works with low levels of solvents and hazardous chemicals.
  • Participates in pedagogy and safety workshops for laboratory and graduate assistants.
  • Other tasks as needed related to chemistry laboratory instruction.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • BS degree in Chemistry or in another laboratory science field with significant coursework in chemistry.
  • Ability to assist with laboratories in the evenings at least two nights per week.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Ability to organize workflow and prioritize work assignments.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a group as part of a team.
  • Ability to interact with faculty, staff, and administrators with diverse backgrounds.
  • Requires Moderate physical activity including unloading inventory.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Proficiency with Workday and Microsoft Office including Word, Excel & PowerPoint.
