Job Description
Ketjen Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Albemarle Corporation, is seeking an IP Paralegal. This position will be a key representative within the global intellectual property department and have responsibility and oversight of multiple technical and internal processes. In addition, role will also provide governance and related support to the Corporate Secretary Department and other corporate functional teams. This position will be based at our in our Houston/Clear Lake, TX office.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Patent Searching (Prior Art, Patentability, Validity, Infringement) – developing and executing search strategies, reviewing and gathering relevant references, and discussing search results with team members.

Patent Watches – set-up and manage relevant watches for patents and trademarks, and communicate and discuss relevant results with team members.

Obtain, as needed, patent copies, file histories and references – obtain relevant records based on team needs.

IP Budget - assist in preparing overall intellectual property budget for the upcoming year including projected costs associated with patent filings, translations, patent prosecution, patent annuities, trademark filings, trademark watches, domain name filings, domain name watches, patent and trademark litigation and patent and trademark searches.

Trademark - Assists Trademark analyst in conducting first pass searches in the USPTO and other foreign databases; backup for Trademark manager.

Acquisitions and Mergers - as needed, prepare patent and trademark portfolios, assignment histories, conduct searches, and generate reports for merger and acquisition activities. Conduct health assessments and integration of intellectual property into Albemarle’s docketing and electronic record management systems.

Manage internal processes for annuity payments and docketing.

Preferably has the ability to act as a back-up for management and negotiation of Confidentiality Agreements.

Databases and Software – Management and oversight of various internal and external databases and processes for the intellectual property group.

Overall responsibility for management of subsidiary structure and governance.

Prepare resolutions, bylaws, minutes, and certificates/appointments for domestic and international subsidiaries.
Education and Experience:
-
Bachelor or higher degree(s) in related field or technical discipline and 10-15+ years relevant experience (or equivalent experience).

Strong analytical capabilities with the ability to independently use data and analysis to convey findings and recommendations to all levels within the organization. Ability to follow strategic direction and develop the critical path on how to complete assignments/initiatives.

Working knowledge of trademark and patent laws and regulations.

Experience filing patent applications and working with docketing software is required. Experience using CPI is preferred.

Strong verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated experience in preparing and delivering documents to various levels of management.

Strong organization and project management skills. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments, projects, and timelines.

Experience in preparing and forecasting budgets for patent and trademark portfolios preferred.

Preferred candidates will have experience in integrating and divesting patent and trademark portfolios in M&A business environments.

International and global business knowledge preferred.

Preferred candidates will have working knowledge of contract management and contract negotiation related to confidentiality and non-analysis types of agreements.

Must have a Texas Notary Public credential or obtain within 90 days of hire date.
