Job Summary

As one primary component of this job, and under the direction of a radiologist, performs screening and diagnostic mammograms at a technical level not requiring constant supervision. Performs a variety of technical imaging procedures that entail application of ionizing radiation; therefore, prudent judgment, strong technical skills, and a commitment to patient safety are considered requisite professional characteristics for individuals assuming the position as a mammography technologist. Another secondary component of this job involves assisting the radiologist in performing interventional breast procedures and breast ultrasound examinations in order to contribute to a diagnosis.

Essential Functions:
  • Performs high quality IR imaging studies by selecting specific software parameters that will produce a quality image for use by physicians in their determination of a diagnosis. Lack of negative complaints from radiologists about inadequately performed IR examinations indicates the standard has been exceeded. More than 3 complaints per year about image quality indicate failure to meet the standard. (15%)

  • Prepares and administers contrast media for patient examinations according to radiologists’ direction. Technologist must be certified in CPR at all times, must complete contrast questionnaires. Technologist must ensure that the IV catheter, if used, is of appropriate type, size, and in the correct location for contrast administration by means of an injector. Technologists must test injector with saline prior to contrast injection. This standard cannot be exceeded. (10%)

  • Operates, on a day-to-day basis, PACS applications to include: archiving activities; image auto-routing; and pre-fetching tasks; image quality assurance and other related activities. Lack of incidents and/or complaints about PACS workflow indicates exceeds standard performance. More than 3 complaints per year about image management indicate failure to meet standard. (10%)

  • Ensures patient safety, comfort, and personal dignity by following appropriate patient care guidelines to include use of 2 patient identifiers. Transports patients to and from the Department of Radiology, as needed, to prevent patient flow delays. Lack of complaints indicates exceeds standard performance. More than 3 complaints per year indicate failure to meet standard. (10%)

  • Assists in the maintenance of department inventory by ordering, stocking, and performing inventory checks on those medical supplies utilized when performing IR examinations. Consistent availability of requisite IR medical supplies indicate exceeds standard. More than 3 incidents of supply unavailability indicate failure to meet standard. (10%)

  • Verifies the physician order and relevant patient’s history in the medical chart. Prior to performance of an IR examination, consults with the relevant radiologist to obtain a written imaging study protocol. Lack of complaints and/or incidents regarding incorrect IR imaging protocols indicates exceeds standard. More than 3 complaint/incidences per year indicate failure to meet standard. (10%)

  • In order to provide the necessary information for radiologists to interpret images, the technologist scans all relevant clinical information into the PACS, assigns prioritization box for the radiologists’ work list, and then transmits current (and comparison images, when applicable) to the PACS. These activities must be completed immediately following examination completion, not to exceed 1 hour. (10%)

  • Maintains imaging and processing equipment by performing scheduled cleanings and tests; results of all cleanings and tests are documented, as appropriate. Contacts service personnel and notifies supervisory staff of equipment malfunctions. (10%)

  • Maintains a clean and orderly working environment through wiping down examination tables, changing linens, stocking supplies, and washing/disinfecting IR equipment. The standard cannot be exceeded. (5%)

  • Documents, as appropriate, all pertinent information on clinical questionnaires (e.g., MRI screening form). This standard cannot be exceeded. (5%)

  • Uses Radiology Information System (RIS) system to input patient examination data and to place patient orders, when appropriate. Less than 2 incidents of incomplete work per month indicates exceeds standard. More than 4 incidents per month indicate failure to meet standard. (5%)

Education:
  • Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program Required

Work Experience:
  • 1-3 years Of professional work experience in performing radiologic procedures, including 6 months undertaking IR imaging studies. Required

Licenses:
  • ABLS-Advanced Burn Life Support - ABA - American Burn Association Required and

  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required and

  • RTR-RT Radiography - ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Required and

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in how to operate IR equipment and related technology.

  • Competency in technical skill set in the performance of IR imagining studies.

  • Knowledge of how to address age-specific care needs of patients.

  • Effective interpersonal skill sets that lead to productive communications and collaborations.

  • Competency in interpreting physician order requests for IR imaging studies.

  • Ability to exercise prudent judgment in selecting and configuring equipment settings to compensate for patient physiologic variances.

  • Ability to consistently produce quality images pf various structures.
