General funds to begin approximately August 2023, pending operational and program needs, actual staffing requirements, and availability of funds. Position may be converted from 9-month to 11-month or 11-month to 9-month as operational needs are required.
Duties:
Teaches a variety of English courses. This may include, but is not limited to, developmental English composition and reading, technical writing, first-year or second-year college composition, or a variety of college-level English literature courses at the Kaua`i Community College campus, as well as Early College English courses offered at different high school campuses on the island of Kaua`i, as needed. Day, evening, early morning, weekend, off-campus, and/or distance education classes may be assigned as part of regular workload. Changes to modality and approaches for teaching assignments may be needed to address emerging needs.- Identifies students' learning needs, including needs of underprepared students, and implements effective teaching strategies to address them.
- Independently plans, organizes, and carries out instructional and non-instructional assignments.
- Revises or creates new curricula and student learning outcomes when necessary, and regularly prepares and revises course syllabi.
- Performs regular course assessments and participates in ongoing discipline-, program-, and institutional-level assessment. Implements adjustments to course content and professional practice to improve student learning in classes taught.
- Participates in discipline-, division-, campus-, and system-wide committees, as well as relevant partnership initiatives between Kaua'i Community College/University of Hawai`i and the Hawai`i Department of Education.
- Maintains appropriate office hours for each course taught.
- Works collaboratively with other Kaua`i Community College faculty and staff.
- Develops and maintains a personal professional development program.
- Demonstrates commitment to Kaua`i Community College's mission, principles, and philosophy.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications:
- Master's degree in English; or
- Master's degree in Composition/Rhetoric; or
- Master's degree in Literature; or
- Master's degree in Fine Arts (Creative Writing).
Desirable qualifications:
- Master's Degree in English from an accredited college or university.
- Demonstrated clarity in oral and written language skills.
- One to three (1-3) years of successful experience teaching reading, composition, technical writing, and/or literature courses at an accredited community college or university.
- Ability to use writing assignments and integrate teaching of appropriate critical thinking skills into course content as an integral part of students' classroom learning activities.
- Successful experience teaching students at a variety of ability and initial skill levels, including underprepared students.
- Successful experience developing and delivering synchronous and/or asynchronous distance education composition and literature classes at the post-secondary level.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively integrate a variety of learning technologies with student instruction, including the use of online platforms, learning management software, distance learning modalities, and/or classroom technology.
- Successful experience integrating a variety of pedagogical approaches in the delivery of instruction, including instructional experience with accelerated/co-requisite learning models.
- Successful multi-cultural teaching experience, especially in Hawai`i and/or Pacific island regions, as well as experience teaching the literatures of these regions.
- Experience working with a tutoring center and utilizing embedded tutors to facilitate student success.
- Ability and desire to be a cooperative, contributing member of a team invested in student success.
