Job Summary

The HVAC III will perform skilled maintenance, troubleshoot, and repair split system air conditioners, package units, and related university equipment. Coordinate with campus personnel on shutdowns for repairs and/or replacements and assist with selection and design criteria for new systems being installed on projects and existing facilities. Will respond in a timely manner to the temperature issues and needs of the occupants in the buildings and assist with HVAC/mechanical maintenance and repairs as needed.


Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks

  • Evaluate, troubleshoot, repair, and replace HVAC-R/mechanical equipment.
  • Evaluate, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair the campus split systems, package units, kitchen freezers/equipment, etc.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on campus equipment.
  • Provide technical review and input for new equipment.
  • Support general maintenance activities and chiller boiler plants as needed.
  • Assist in the operations of Utility Plants.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Required Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Associates degree in air conditioning/refrigeration preferred.
  • Five (5) years of experience in the refrigeration industry.
  • Universal Section 608 EPA Certificate in HVAC, Freon.
  • Certificate of completion of two (2) year HVAC/Refrigeration Technician class preferred.
  • Experience to be considered in leu of education.


Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

  • Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in written form.
  • Ability to read and comprehend construction drawings.
  • Competent with electronic database.
  • Ability to follow and understand electronic schematics.
  • Ability to use a multi meter to diagnose electrical issues.

  • This position may work in or around all weather conditions, extreme temperatures, chemical fumes, standard office conditions, biohazards, chemicals, electrical hazards, and mechanical hazards.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
