This position is open for the 2023-24 School Year.
Elwyn's Davidson School is licensed and approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, for students aged 3 to 21 diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, neurological impairment, vision and hearing impairment, intellectual disabilities, behavioral challenges, and medically fragile conditions. In Media, over 400 students referred from 52 local school districts receive individualized services according to their specific needs in highly-structured classrooms with low student-to-staff ratio
- Apply knowledge of plants, propagation, landscape design and management, and the business aspects of horticulture to develop and deliver instructional/lesson plans and related activities through effective teaching methods for student comprehension by leading daily classes according to appropriate curriculum and best practices in horticulture, present live demonstration utilizing lesson planning, teaching, hands-on learning, and lecturing of principles which involve student practice including, but not limited to, soil, seeding, plant nutrition, weed management, farming and gardening, landscape plant materials, sustainable landscapes
- Teach horticulture and work skills to high school and transition students wishing to pursue a career in horticulture or a related field through modeling and demonstration of skills, hand-over-hand instruction where required, assessment of execution of transferred skills, giving constructive feedback, completing progress reports, making recommendations for internship and work readiness, advising students demonstrating interest in horticulture, and recognizing and responding appropriately to individual differences in student learning styles and abilities to develop lesson plans and plan lessons in a logical sequence
- Coordinate student conferences to review students' performance, behavior, and any issues related to work readiness and knowledge of horticultural skills, administer quizzes and various types of assessments to monitor student's comprehension of material
- Coordinate with local industry connections to promote and provide service learning, cooperative education, and work-based learning opportunities for the students
- Set up opportunities for internship positions and coordinate assemblies, campus demonstrations, seasonal field trips, in addition to the industry partnerships to further horticultural knowledge, encourage student inclusion, and community integration and ease
- Conduct regular site visits to locations where students have been placed to ensure the satisfactory transfer of skills, continued support
- Collaborate with other educators to create the most thorough educational environment and experience possible for students
- Teach and model for students the routine, order, maintenance, structure, and discipline necessary to be successful in the cultivation and management of growing and handling foliage plants, herbs, fruits, vegetables, ground cover/turf including, but not limited to, the proper way to manage, handle and store seeds and vegetation, and indoor hydroponics versus outdoor land based growing by consistently implementing procedures to allow for effective instruction and classroom management
- Perform duties that encourage student achievement including, but not limited to, taking attendance, monitoring daily set up and cleanup activities, greenhouse and garden tool cleanliness and organization methods and procedures, and facilitating participation in horticulture competitions while consistently implementing approved disciplinary actions to allow for effective instruction and classroom management
- Administer and/or support state and local standardized testing processes and policies
- Attend faculty meetings and training, participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLC) and all Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE)-required/program-required professional development, including self-evaluative and program-established assessment tools and processes, utilize technology and devices as a tool in the teaching and learning process, regularly communicate with parents and other community members in a positive and helpful manner to ensure student progress and stakeholder participation, participate in school and district professional development in order to support school improvement and support student learning, attending staff meetings and serve on committees as required
- Enforce rules and regulations as stated in the teacher and student handbook
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Safety Care Behavioral Crisis Prevention and Management (Safety Care) as needed using agency-trained protocols
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in Agricultural Education, Horticulture, Landscaping, Agricultural Economics, Animal and Dairy Science, Plant and Soil Science, Poultry Science or Veterinary Science or related field
- Must hold or be eligible for a current, valid Pennsylvania Department of Education certification in one of the following: Agriculture PK-12, Career and Technical Instructional 7-12, Environmental Education PK-12
- Two (2) years' experience teaching and/or providing training in Horticulture or a related field including greenhouse management
- Experience communicating with families, formally and informally, including engaging families in their child's education program
- Experience with adaptive technology preferred
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Must possess excellent customer interaction, collaboration, presentation, and written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage and prioritize multiple, often competing, priorities
- Demonstrated strong attention to detail
- Demonstrated strong time management and organizational skills
- Demonstrated excellent judgment with the ability to independently solve problems and make decisions with little or no need for direct supervision
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate future needed changes or identify problem areas and take effective actions
- Experience using/knowledge of electronic student record systems preferred
- Must be able to perform CPR, First Aid, and crisis intervention using agency-trained protocols
- Demonstrated intermediate experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
