Unit Mission Statement
The Buildings and Grounds unit contributes to the successful operation of Highland by ensuring appropriate and attractive physical plant conditions.
Position Summary
Gardener(s) may specialize in either flowers or vegetables or may cover duties in both realms and are responsible for cultivating gardens with appropriate plants; planting and caring for them with watering, weeding, pruning, and pest and weed control. The Gardener works in concert with the Buildings and Grounds Superintendent to select cultivars and plant them at the appropriate time and in the right locations. They prune and fertilize shrubs and assist the Groundskeeper(s) with grounds maintenance, especially after storm events. Gardeners also interpret the Highland garden to the public as needed.
This position is located on-site at James Monroe’s Highland in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge of basic horticultural practices.
- Experience with planting and maintaining flower or vegetable gardens.
- Working knowledge of shrub and small tree care.
- Ability to apply pesticides and herbicides.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-high school education or training in a field related to the position.
- Knowledge of historic plants and cultivation practices.
- Interest and/or experience in interpreting the historic landscape or gardens for the public.
- Certification in Pesticides.

Conditions of Employment
This position is a temporary (hourly) position not to exceed 6 months. All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed on average 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year.
This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
