Our new state of the art development center in Austin, Texas is the home for our next generation technical solutions. Engineers will develop flight and mission-critical firmware for more than 170 commercial and military customers. You will have the opportunity to help design and develop the next generation: Fly-By-Wire Flight Controls, Aircraft Engine Controls, Ground Vehicle Power Management Systems, Aircraft Electrification Systems, Advanced Air Mobility Systems, Autonomous Flight Systems, Flight Deck Systems, Cabin Management Systems, Weapon Control Systems, and Mission Systems for the world's most prominent commercial and military aircraft and vehicle manufacturers.

FPGA Engineer typical duties include:
Ideal candidate will have well rounded experience with intermediate to mastery level skills for many of the following tasks:
- Requirement development and management - Work with internal or external customers to decompose system level requirements to develop a complete requirement set that will be the basis of design development, and familiar with requirement management tools. Participate in requirement reviews and provide feedback to developers.
- Architecture and conceptual design - Work with a cross functional team to perform trades and establish the FPGA architecture and conceptual design. Participate in conceptual design reviews and provide feedback to developers.
- Detailed design - Implement the design in either VHDL, Verilog, or model through Matlab for Microsemi, Xilinx, Lattice, and/or Altera FPGAs. Integrate the design in hardware and debug issues. Participate in detailed design reviews and provide feedback to developers.
- Verification development –Plan, architect, develop, and use configurable, self-checking testbenches implemented in VHDL, SystemVerilog or UVM
Plan, design and develop hardware in the loop tests using in house test equipment. Familiarity with lab equipment included logic analyzers, oscilloscope and protocol analyzers.
Perform detailed timing (i.e. Timing Designer) and elemental analysis on complex FPGA designs
Participate in verification reviews and provide feedback to developers.
- Mentoring – Opportunities to collaborate with junior engineers in technical and process activities.
- Leadership – Opportunities to Plan, execute, and manage FPGA development on a project. Monitor the team’s progress and work with project leadership to collaborate with the customer.

This role involves a combination of collaborative/in-person and independent work and will take the form of a hybrid work schedule, with time split between working onsite and remotely.

The following education, skills and experiences are required in order to be considered for the role.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or other related technical field
- 6+ years FPGA Engineer experience (defined above)
- Working knowledge of Configuration and Change Management systems such as Doors, Synergy, Windchill, Git, etc. (One, All, or Equivalent)
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
The below experiences and skills are preferred but NOT required to be qualified for this position. This position is open for a range of career levels and BAE Systems will work with candidates to find a role that best aligns to their experiences.
- Master’s in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or other related technical field
- Experience with Hard IP / SoC FPGA elements such as: PCIe Cores, Math Blocks, CPUs, etc
- Experience with Soft IP FPGA elements such as: CPUs, PHY’s, Comm Blocks, etc
- Experience in a Safety Critical or Functional Safety Real Time Embedded Electronics Industry such as: Aerospace, Military, Medical, Automotive, Industrial / Energy / Nuclear, Internet of Things (IoT)
- Experience with Safety Critical or Functional Safety industry standards such as: ARP-4754A, DO-254A, DO-178B, DO-178C, IEC 62304, IEC 62368, IEC 61508, ISO 26262
- Experience with Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) (e.g. SysML, UML, MagicDraw, Rhapsody)
- Experience with Control Law Development
