Location: Pittsburg, Kansas and surrounding counties

Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

The Family First Prevention Services Act (FFPSA) START is a family-centered, collaborative intervention for families with child protective services’ involvement and children 0-5 years of age, who are impacted by parental substance use. START is a voluntary program where families work with a case manager and family mentor to help parents achieve recovery and keep children in their home when safe and possible.

DCCCA is recruiting for FFPSA Family Mentors to work with families where parental substance use is a concern to assist in the treatment and recovery process. Family Mentors serve families in Shawnee County and surrounding counties. They provide for the safety, stability and well-being of children and families by delivering and coordinating culturally competent case management services that are responsive to the unique needs of the family.As individuals with lived experience with substance abuse, treatment, and recovery, Family Mentors provide hope and encouragement to families. Successful candidates place a high value on keeping families intact. We are looking for individuals that take initiative, manage multiple priorities, quickly gain trust and rapport, work well in a fast-paced environment, and complete work carefully and accurately. Overview of the Family Mentor:

  • Provides for the safety, stability and well-being of children and families during the referral period
  • Delivers culturally competent services using a strengths-based approach to children and families consistent with the evidence-based practice models
  • Meets DCF timelines to connect with the family and facilitate the initial family meeting
  • Engages and works in partnership with the case manager and family to complete assessments
  • Responds to calls and client emergencies as needed including being on-call and working some weekends and public holidays as necessary
  • Meets with clients at least once a week to offer one-one-one support
  • Develops recovery plans, coping methods and rehabilitation services with the client
  • Facilitates treatment assessments and referrals and provides client support in arranging for medical appointments, counseling, support groups and other resources as needed
  • Monitors the client's behavior, schedule, medication and activities and reports any unusual behavior, conflicts or recovery deviations to the relevant professionals
  • Provides transportation and resources and coordinates community support services as needed
  • Job may require the employee to be able to regularly drive to various DCCCA locations and other business locations throughout the day or night as required

Qualifications for the Family Mentor:

  • Must have lived experience with substance abuse, treatment, and recovery with a minimum of three years of continuous recovery and be working with a stable recovery program (12-step, church/spiritual, other recovery support group)
  • Requires knowledge of recovery resources and has experience interacting with individuals seeking recovery
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Personal experience with child welfare preferred

Successful completion of post-offer background screening, reference checks, fingerprinting clearance, and drug screening is required. Records do not necessarily preclude someone from employment. Class C driver’s license with clear driving record, reliable personal transportation, and current automobile insurance, required. Approval by DCCCA’s auto insurance provider to drive vehicles on DCCCA business, required.
