Job description

Do people always comment on how organized and structured you are? Do people also tell you that you're a person who sees the glass as half full instead of half empty? Are you also a person who everyone feels like they've known you forever after meeting you? How about someone who feels like they're hearing nails run down a chalkboard if you see someone use their, they're, or there wrong?

If you answered yes to all of those, then definitely keep reading!

OCFL is seeking a full-time Lead Paralegal/Case Manager to train and oversee other paralegals as well as conducting paralegal litigation work as well within a very busy family law firm.

Please have a strong understanding of the various requirements relating to drafting and filing Massachusetts family law pleadings, how to draft financial statements, strategizing and organizing discovery requests and responses, calendaring, e-filing and snail mail filing, the normal deadlines and how to track them, best practices in ensuring a case is always moving forward, communicating with the legal team and third parties, ethics, and trial preparation. Not only will this position be doing all of the above, you'll be teaching others to do it too!

We may be slightly biased because we love our firm, but we have a great supportive team and work for the best of the clients at all time over personal needs/agendas. That being said, we work hard and play hard. We are committed to giving back to the community around us and plan and host quarterly community engagement events. We recently founded a non-profit to be able to host larger events that will raise funds to benefit local charities as well as provide us the option to start building our own program to help make life better for others.

It is absolutely necessary to have great writing and verbal skills, a typing speed of no less than 60 wpm, experience with Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe (Foxit), timekeeping and case management software (we use Clio), document management, smartphone applications, Zoom or Google meets, and other similar technology.

Please note that we do not offer health insurance directly, but instead offer a health insurance reimbursement plan called a QSEHRA.

Things to know about this position to help you decide whether to apply:

· You will be dealing with people who are often at a low point in their lives so being empathetic but having the ability to set boundaries is important

· Family Law often feels like we are constantly putting out fires every day – We want someone who can handle the stress and demand of that, but help us become a more proactive rather than reactive firm

· You will be training and overseeing various virtual paralegals – you must be as good as a leader as you are a paralegal

· We are extremely busy and, within the firm, there are typically somewhere around 300-400 cases ongoing at any given time between the attorneys on our team.

· We are trying to move to a no paper firm (if family court ever truly allows it) – You need to be very knowledgeable and skilled at using technology

· Humor is a must – it’s how we seem to deal with the intense drama that we deal with every day

· Knowledge of the court procedure, statutory laws, case law, standing orders, and all other information that influences what needs to be done in a family law case and how to find information when you need it but don’t know the answer is an absolute must

· Paralegal or other law firm experience is a must due to the teaching and leadership aspect of this position

· You need to live within a reasonable driving distance from our Westborough location as the expectation is for this to be an in-person position, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 – 5:00 p.m.

If you're still reading and you remain interested, please make sure you attach an interesting cover letter that gives us an idea of your personality. Your resume will tell us what you have done professionally.

In the cover letter, please also answer this question in addition to anything else you write: If your attorney has a filing deadline at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, you have provided them with the draft of a client's financial statement to review, and the attorney has not yet reviewed the draft as of 12:00 noon on that Wednesday - what would you do?
