The Equity Research Analyst plays a critical role in developing and managing the Firm’s Wealth Management group by working with and supporting the CIO and Senior Portfolio Managers responsible for internally managed individual stock portfolios. This position is responsible for a universe of US traded stocks from small to large market capitalizations, continuously assessing risk/reward of current holdings and potential new ideas.

The Equity Research Analyst leverages external research resources for data analysis and new idea generation, developing and presenting a logical, fundamental investment thesis on individual stocks based on primary and external research, and creating company models that include financial statements, comparable valuations and discounted cash flows. This position builds and maintains materials to outline and support the equity decision making process, contribute to materials in support of the broader investment team asset allocation decision making process, and discuss with clients and key stakeholders the investment decision making process and rationale for investment decisions.

Reporting Relationships:

This position reports to the Chief Investment Officer.

Location: Boston, MA; A hybrid work arrangement is available for this position.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Apply NPTC’s formal framework for equity research/selection process including:

Framework for new security selection based on established criteria, including:Fundamental Quality Thresholds (consistent with above-average quality/secular growth theme).
Detailed analysis/evidence/financial models supporting all investment ideas.
Standardized, definable, measurable, and repeatable process for stock analysis for presentation to Investment Department/Trustees.
Process for maintenance and “use” of stock research that does NOT result in an immediate “actionable” idea.

Framework for ongoing maintenance/analysis of existing stocks in NP Model Portfolio, including:Defined process that provides timely opinions about all securities in NP Model portfolio.
Defined review process of existing NP Model portfolio companies on regular (quarterly earnings), periodic (and ad hoc) basis.
Clearly defined “Buy/Sell” discipline.

  • Contribute to efforts to improve or modify NPTC’s equity research framework.
  • Develop and maintain up-to-date Stock List, including measures of relative attractiveness of each NP Model Portfolio US Large Cap company.
  • With bottom-up driven stock research process, apply sector weighting criteria and process to revisit appropriateness of sector/stock weights.
  • Establish annual stock research goals, including:Target number of “actionable” stock ideas on an annual basis.

Quantify target relative performance goals vs. appropriate benchmark (S&P 500) and understand explicitly reasons out/underperformance ater inclusion in client portfolios.
Maintain “Model” portfolio for performance tracking purposes.

  • Contribute to framework/process to research, analyze, understand emerging investment themes and areas of topical interest for possible investment merit (AI/ML, alternative energy, etc.).
  • Contribute to research into developments in the global equity markets.
  • Initiate trades and rebalance client portfolios using NP order management trading and analysis systems.
  • Research and contribute asset class views, sector and security views in non-equity financial products including fixed income, commodity, private investments, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • 5-10 years of equity analysis and valuation experience, preferably within a law firm or professional services environment.
  • Buy-side sector expertise or sell-side research expertise a plus.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree or CFA preferred. Work experience in lieu of a degree will be considered.
  • Excel and PowerPoint expertise with experience on Bloomberg and/or FactSet. A strong desire to become more proficient with these applications.
  • Logical decision-making process. Ability to identify key drivers and efficiently, effectively assess the risk/reward of investments.
  • A team player who sees tasks/projects through to completion in a timely manner.
  • Strong interest in wealth management and trust companies.
  • Strong ability to perform financial statement, business, and valuation analysis.
  • Ability to translate research into actionable ideas for client portfolios.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Self-starter with a results-driven personality.
