This position involves responsibility for the performance of duties as a skilled journeyman electrician in the installation and maintenance of electrical wiring, equipment, and devices. The work is carried out in accordance with well-established, accepted, safe and sound electrical installation, maintenance, and repair techniques and procedures in accordance with applicable State and local codes. Incumbents perform their duties under the general supervision of a higher-ranking administrator/manager with considerable latitude allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in the planning and/or laying out of the details of work. Direct supervision may be exercised over the activities of a limited number of workers, who assist in the performance of maintenance and repair jobs, on a semi-skilled level. Does related work as required.

- Reads and interprets plans and blueprints in planning for the installation of new electric service, lines, and equipment.
- Installs and properly wires a variety of electrical devices including breakers, fuse boxes, junction boxes, lighting and fan fixtures, transformers, rheostats, voltage regulators, electric heat runs, and electric outlets.
- Runs new electrical lines and wires them appropriately for required service.
- Operates testing equipment utilized in the trade to locate shorts and malfunctions in a variety of electrical devices and equipment, and performs repair or replacement accordingly.
- Installs a variety of electrical appliances and tests them to insure proper operation.
- Maintains and repairs electrical motors and other components of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment, and performs adjustments as necessary.
- Estimates materials required for installation and repairs.
- Keeps daily time and material records.
- Performs carpentry and plumbing work incidental to but needed for proper completion of electrical jobs.
- May be required to install telephone lines and other wiring for hook-up of computer equipment.
- Knowledge of the practices, procedures, materials, terminology, tools, and safety precautions of the electrical trade.
- Knowledge of the design, construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of electric instruments, devices, and equipment.
- Skill in the use of the full range of tools and testing equipment used in the electrical trade.
- The ability to understand and follow oral and written directions, some of a highly-technical nature.
- The ability to read and understand plans and blueprints; mechanical aptitude; and manual dexterity.
- Dependability; thoroughness; attention to detail with a view to safety; willingness to work with high voltage equipment and devices;
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and either:
Graduation from a regionally-accredited or New York State-registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Electrical Technology or closely-related field and one year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as a journeyman electrician; or- Two years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as a journeyman electrician; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b) above.
