General Nature of Work


Under general supervision, this position implements educational programming, including field trips for schools and adult groups, general visitor programming, and informal learning activities. Assists in training staff and volunteers on informal learning practices and being the content expert on the history and stories of Smith-Gilbert Gardens. Assists with providing a welcoming and positive visitor experience.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Overview of Priority Jub Duties


  • Develop, prepare, and deliver developmentally appropriate lessons for PreK-12 students, educational groups and family audiences.
  • Work collaboratively to update interpretive ideas and teaching strategies and support efforts to develop new programs and resources.
  • Maintain proper supplies for learning programs, including disposable materials.
  • Assist with training, monitoring, and communicating with volunteers
  • Support public program, special events, and garden wide initiatives as appropriate
  • Greet and welcome daily visitors, provide wayfinding, information, and assist in checking in and retail purchases


Education


  • Working with their direct Manager and the Executive Director, develop and implement educational programming for all ages.
  • Help build new audiences and expand programming through partnership.
  • Schedule and conduct school field trips and adult tours; schedule docents to lead tours.
  • Communicate with schools, garden clubs, senior centers, recreational programs, summer camps and day care centers to promote field trips.
  • Working with their direct Manager, implement comprehensive annual docent training program.


Visitor Experience


  • Assists in developing materials for on-site interpretation, including informational signage, brochures, and scripts for storytelling.
  • Assists the Visitor Services Coordinator in welcoming visitors to the Gardens, by checking them in, providing information for their visit, and answering questions about the Gardens.


Volunteers


  • Oversees Education Volunteers, providing schedules and shift availability, training, and oversight of program delivery
  • Track Education volunteer hours, including any training time, orientation, and onsite programming
  • Communicates with volunteers on regular basis.


Additional


  • Welcome visitors; collect fees as appropriate, assist with Gift Shop sales

  • Assist with answering phone; direct messages to appropriate person(s) in a timely manner.

  • Other duties as assigned.


ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS


Performs other related duties as required.


Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, environmental education or related field.
  • Minimum of two years of experience developing and teaching informal education programs with preference for experience in a public garden, children’s museum or science museum.
  • Experience working with volunteers required.
  • Candidate with knowledge of local school system is a plus.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to multi-task, work in a team environment, and with minimal supervision.
  • Necessary computer skills include Microsoft Office (Access, Excel, Power Point, Word, etc.) and scheduling platform such as Sign Up Genius.
