The Department of Social and Health Services, within the Developmental Disabilities Administration at Lakeland Village Residential Habilitation Center, is seeking an Adult Training Specialist to work in the Adult Programs section of our Intermediate Care Facility. In this role, you will work directly with individuals with developmental disabilities and will write and implement training programs for groups and individuals. Our Adult Training Specialists are key to the success of empowering the lives of the people we serve by providing vocational learning opportunities.

Some of what you'll do:


  • Develop, write, update, and implement group and individual programs for persons with developmental disabilities in classroom settings for vocational learning activities such as environmental controls relaxation, and other vocational readiness skills as outlined in the Individual Habilitation Plan (IHP)
  • Instruct, train, and supervise individuals in developmental, educational, vocational, language, behavior, social, community survival, and other training programs.
  • Conduct/facilitate various tabletop activities or other activities tailored to the individual Resident
  • Teach residents to maintain safety in the classroom or vocational environment and actively participate in the development of resident training plans, attend meetings, and provide program input information gathered from the classroom
  • Perform duties associated with set-up, clean-up, and general upkeep of classroom, training vocational, and/or habilitation areas that may include relocating large or odd-shaped materials
  • Document Resident classroom progress and behaviors in the Resident Unit Record (RUR) using a computer and approved state databases; will maintain and report data per resident program and record-keeping needs in order to meet ICF-ID and other regulations
  • Provide physical support/intervention for residents, care for personal hygiene needs of residents, and check on diet plans when assisting a resident.
  • Escort residents who may need assistance due to limited mobility skills, who may be unsteady or require the use of a wheelchair between AP and their home cottage
  • Understand, recall, and follow up as a direct care provider providing physical support/intervention for residents, and checking on diet plans whenever assisting a Resident
  • Use email and appropriate state databases to develop, complete, and disseminate classroom assessments and other required assessments as needed
What we are looking for:
  • Experience operating a desktop computer and using Microsoft software programs, including Outlook and Word
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse work environment
  • Experience supporting residents who are developmentally disabled and may possess a co-occurring disorder of mental illness by teaching new skills, maintaining skills, and focusing on the resident's rights and quality of life
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions
Who should apply?

Requirements for ATS 1
High School graduation or GED or Equivalent Education/Experience (work experience that is equal to what is described in the job announcement)
Requirements for ATS 2
Professionals with a high school diploma or GED and successful completion of fifteen specific, job-related college credit hours, and one of the following:
  • One year of experience as an Adult Training Specialist 1
  • One year of experience as a vocational trainer of persons with disabilities in a community employment program or sheltered workshop
  • One year of experience as a teacher's aide in a special education classroom
  • Two years of experience as an Attendant Counselor AND
  • Specific job-related credits:
    15 credit hours in at least two of the following areas at the 100 or higher level:
  • English
  • Psychology
  • Education/Special Education
  • Computer Science or Math
  • Human Services
