Safety Officer 3

The Department of Social and Health Services, Maintenance and Operation Division (MOD), is hiring a Safety Officer 3 to join their Maintenance Team in Lakewood.

Within a maintenance setting, you’ll perform and administer comprehensive employee occupational safety and health programs at Western State Hospital, the Child Study and Treatment Center, and the Fort Steilacoom Competency Restoration Program. You'll work with and advise health and safety officers ensuring safety efforts are part of the comprehensive agency/institution safety programs.

Your professional review, consultation, and evaluation help prevent security breaches and ensure the safety of staff.

Some of what you’ll do

  • Manage employee occupational safety and health programs
  • Perform ongoing internal safety and health evaluations/audits of assigned locations
  • Ensure local compliance with federal/state laws, regulations, policies, and required professional accreditation
  • Assess the level of safety and health compliance
  • Perform systematic follow-up on safety findings and violation complaints from staff, management, or outside agencies
  • Assigned liaison during safety and health-related audit/inspection visits
  • Deliver expert and professional consultation, guidance, and training to executive managers, staff, and safety committees
  • Develop, implement, promote, and manage loss-control and loss-prevention programs
  • Maintain records of various documents and reports
  • Conduct reviews and investigations of staff accidents

Who should apply
Professionals with a bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health, safety studies, natural science, business or public administration, education, or an allied field.
AND
Four years of professional experience in occupational safety and health programs.

(A master’s degree in occupational safety and health, safety studies, natural science, business or public administration, education, or allied field may substitute for 2 years of the above professional work experience requirement.)

OR equivalent education/experience.

Desired
  • Experience working within a maintenance setting
  • Working knowledge of clear writing techniques; an ability to apply "plain talk" standards to procedural and policy documents
  • Experience properly interpreting and applying Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Americans with Disabilities Act, Joint Commission, Washington State Hospital Association, Revised Code of Washington, Washington Administrative Code, Labor & Industries, and National Fire Protection Association Life Safety codes, rules, and regulations related to safety and occupational health
  • Ability to conduct successful delivery of security-related training to large, diverse groups
  • Ability to travel
