Job Description

The Twin Valley Unified Union School District has an opening for a Food Services Manager beginning in the 2023 - 2024 school year. The Food Services Manager oversees/prepares and serves nutritious snacks and meals to students and manages the food service activity at an assigned location, serving healthy, attractive, nutritious snacks and meals to the students and staff at an atmosphere of efficiency, cleanliness and warmth. The position would oversee two or more assistant cooks.

Essential Functions:
  • Implement cost effective menu plans that meet students' mandated USDA daily nutritional requirements
  • Monitor inventory, order food and supplies, inspect food shipments for quality and accuracy and manage the associated recordkeeping and paperwork
  • Prepare food and/or supervise preparation of food, estimating amounts and adjusting recipes to minimize waste while preparing proper quantities to meet the necessary age and state requirements
  • Follow special food preparation/serving requirements for students with special diets and/or food allergies
  • Evaluate food for appearance and taste quality prior to serving
  • Maintain required state/federal food service records
  • Monitor the daily count of students eating hot lunch/breakfast
  • Arrange food and beverage items in an attractive and efficient order
  • Serve food and/or supervise the serving of food and provide clean trays and utensils
  • Clean and/or supervise the cleaning and sterilization of kitchen equipment, food prep and service areas, dishes, silverware and utensils to meet the highest cleanliness standards
  • Monitor equipment function and temperatures of refrigerators and freezers, reporting malfunctions to supervisor for prompt attention
  • Perform other duties as necessary to maintain a clean and efficient food service operation
  • Stay current with the changing landscape of school nutrition i.e. Farm to School, wellness policy, etc.
  • Attend a minimum of 10 hours of professional standards training annually
  • Maintain ServSafe Certification
  • Understand and follow the grant process including grant writing and submission, procurement process, and compliance

Job Requirements

  • Qualifications:
    • High school diploma
    • 1-2 years of hands-on cooking and food prep experience in a commercial kitchen or restaurant, preferably in a management capacity

    Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
    • Knowledge of appropriate sanitation requirements
    • Proficient cooking skills
    • Basic math skills
    • Basic computer skills
    • Ability to multitask and work with interruption
    • Patience with children
    • Meticulous record keeping skills

    Tools/Technology Requirements:
    • Commercial kitchen equipment
    • Food preparation tools

    Physical & Mental Demands:
    Requires prolonged periods of standing (up to 5 hours) as well as bending, twisting and squatting. Must lift up to 50 lbs.

    Work Environment:
    Work is performed primarily indoors. Kitchen can become hot at times. Some exposure to sharp utensils and hot items requires prudent safety practices.
