SUMMARY
Disease Intervention Program Supervisors are responsible for the oversight and direction of staff who study and track reportable diseases, outbreaks and spread, and prevention and treatment in an effort to aid with public health. They are responsible for assigning cases and monitoring the progress of the work being performed and reporting findings to appropriate agencies. In addition, they collaborate with other healthcare staff and officials, and are responsible for educating the public and providing resources to aid with disease identification, prevention, and treatment. Disease Intervention Program Supervisors operate under the general supervision of a Disease Intervention Program Manager who reviews work through conferences, reports and meetings.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Administers medication protocols and sample collections to identify disease and treat patients once disease has been discovered.
  • Educates the public, health care providers, and staff on diseases identification, prevention, and treatment using presentations, CDC guidelines and updates, medical literature, conferences, and continuing education courses.
  • Interacts with health care representatives, program supervisors and managers, disease control staff, and the public to share information on disease identification, treatment, and prevention.
  • Oversees the investigation of reportable diseases by assigning cases to disease control staff, documenting investigations, reviewing completed staff reports, and submitting investigation reports to other county managers or Alabama Department of Public Health.
  • Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Driver’s license.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with at least 24 credit hours in biological sciences, anatomy, behavioral sciences, health education, health science, public health, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a public health setting in the provision of community-based health services such as communicable disease investigation, treatment and control, health education, counseling, interviewing, or a closely related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in public health, health education, biology, microbiology, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a Disease Intervention Specialist in the specific program area for which the job opening is listed.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGES:
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and vocabulary for accurately describing the human body and associated components, conditions, and processes in a science-based manner.
  • Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the human body, with respect to location, structure, appearance, functions, and vital processes of internal organs.
  • Knowledge of the pathology, pathophysiology, and epidemiology of diseases.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Work is performed primarily in an office setting, within medical or healthcare facilities, or within the field to schools, businesses, etc.
  • Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods.
