About the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites:
The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS) is a statewide museum system with 12 locations including the Indiana State Museum in downtown Indianapolis and 11 historic sites in the Indiana communities of Evansville, Corydon, New Albany, Rome City, Madison, Fountain City, Geneva, New Harmony, Nashville, Vincennes, and Metamora.

Salary Statement:
This position starts at an annual salary of $70,000 but may be commensurate with education and job experience.
About the Job:
The Director of Communication is responsible for writing, developing and communicating the messages, stories and information related to the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites 12-location museum system with the goal of engaging diverse audiences, raising the visibility of the museum and sites, and driving attendance.
Applicants must submit two writing samples that demonstrate their writing abilities.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Primary media contact
- Writing/editing; knowledge of AP Style
- Writing/distributing media materials (releases, pitches, backgrounders, fact sheets)
- Writing thought leadership pieces for museum leadership team (op-eds, letter to editor, blogs, bylined articles)
- Writing president/CEO remarks and speeches
- Writing copy for collateral materials including board and fundraising communications
- Writing copy for website
- Crisis communication planning
- Develop statewide communication plan that includes Indiana State Museum and 11 historic sites
- Develop “mini” communication plans for special exhibits, programs and events
- Develop internal communication plan
- Provide in-house media training for appropriate staff
- Maintain close professional relationships with peers in the industry – including Visit Indy, Indiana Destination Development Corporation, Indiana Tourism Association, Indiana and Indianapolis Chambers of Commerce, Arts Council of Indianapolis and others; as well as peer arts and culture institutions – including The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, White River State Park attractions, Conner Prairie and others
- Has a long-standing relationship with major media outlets in and around Indianapolis
- Ability to connect with media outlets around the state
- Statewide travel to state historic sites is required

What You'll Need for Success:
You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:
- Undergraduate degree from an accredited university in the area of public relations, marketing communication, digital communication, or related major.
- Showing progressive experience in public relations, marketing communication, or related field.
- Ability to represent the museum system to various community stakeholders through presentations, speeches, at community events/booths, etc.
- Some supervisory experience required.
