GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
The Director of Latino/a/x Outreach Programs (LOP) provides outreach and involvement opportunities to Latino/a/x undergraduate and graduate students at Pacific University. The Director develops and implements programming throughout the year to support the recruitment, matriculation, retention and academic success of Latino/a/x students. Promotes the value and advantage of biculturalism and bilingualism. Provides one-on-one support for families and students in English and Spanish.
Salary range: $50,000 - 60,000 DOE. Application review to begin May 15th and will remain open until filled. This position begins after July 1, 2023.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides direct outreach and support for students and Spanish-speaking families in both English and Spanish.
- Relies on best practices for student engagement including regular assessment and continuous improvement practices, in accordance with university and division guidelines and deadlines.
- Engages students in activities and involvement opportunities that foster a sense of belonging.
- Addresses student concerns according to Division procedure, including consulting with supervisor or Dean, making documentation, referrals, and follow-up according to job scope, i.e., mandated reporter, unlicensed. This position does not provide mental health services or academic advising, but may provide ongoing guidance or intervention in specific cases when directed by their supervisor.
- Works in close collaboration with the Admissions Offices and Office of Student Support as well as other campus offices.
- Develops communication plans for relevant student populations and maintains related webpages and social media.
- Monitors related student spaces and develops initiatives to best meet the needs of students in each space.
- Supports student cultural clubs and organizations related to our Latino/a/x population.
- Recruits, hires and supervises student employees to support area goals and outcomes.
- Operates within established Student Affairs protocols and within budget.
- Works occasional evenings and weekends as needed for programming.
- This position is an in-person position (not remote), primarily located on the Forest Grove campus with occasional work and meetings on the Hillsboro campus.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
- Serve on University and Divisional committees, task forces, and hiring committees, as needed.
- Provide summary reporting and information as requested.
- Provide educational opportunities and consultation to campus stakeholders on how to best respond to the needs of Latino/a/x students.
- Contribute to strategic planning, training of staff, and professional development within the Division of Student Affairs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Provide back-up to other areas of Student Affairs as needed, for example, Orientation, Campus Living, etc.
- Actively seek out and identify innovative ways to improve the student experience and student success.
- May serve in the rotating on-call consultation system within Student Affairs.
- Listen for, respond empathetically, initiate referral, and documentation for follow-up on occasions when students present with high distress or with other concerns that impede their success as students.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree. Master’s in Student Development or Affairs, or related field preferred.
- Ongoing professional development to remain current on best practices in student services.
- Knowledge of and/or experience with Latino/a/x communities.
PREFERRED CRITERIA:
- 1-3 years of experience working in a higher education setting
- Familiarity with the student experience in higher education
- Event planning experience

- Spanish and English language skills, both written and spoken

- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to prioritize and perform multiple projects, track data, meet timelines, respond to others in a timely manner.
- Ability to work both independently and as a collaborative member of the Student Affairs team.
- Evidence of skill in being able to build and sustain collaborative relationships with interdisciplinary colleagues and students of diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write in a clear and concise manner with few spelling or grammar errors.
- Ability to solve problems and be decisive during events.
- Ability to respond to parent/family concerns and inquiries with accuracy and in a timely fashion.
- Ability to de-escalate and appropriately refer parent concerns/complaints.
- Ability to promote a positive impression and association with Pacific University for community members, families, and students.
- Maintains appearance and personal conduct appropriate to a professional office setting.
JOB SCOPE:
- Performs duties independently with minimal supervision, operating from specific and definite directions and instructions.
- Decisions are made within University and Student Affairs policy and constraints, but occasionally require independent decision-making.
- Oversight of special projects on occasion in collaboration with colleagues within Student Affairs and other on-campus colleagues.
- Complies with laws, rules, and ethical standards applicable to duties.
SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY:
- May supervise student workers.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Typical office environment between orientation events.
- Outdoors and around campus during events
- Occasional weekend hours required.
- Ability to travel between campuses as necessary.
