The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering (HWCOE) is searching for a dynamic and experienced Director for Human Resources who is innovative and forward thinking with a distinguished record managing HR operations and providing exceptional service and support to all faculty, staff, and students. The Director partners with and is the principal liaison between the HWCOE and University offices regarding HR matters.

The HWCOE research portfolio includes major federal agencies with varying and complex regulations requiring significant attention to detail, rules, regulations, and policies to ensure compliance. The incumbent is expected to have a thorough understanding of UF directives, procedures, and processes pertaining to HR and will be expected to support the strategic objectives of the HWCOE by upholding standards of innovation, safety, compliance, and service excellence. The Director will interpret University HR policies, provide consultation and advice on HR issues and concerns. Ensuring that the HWCOE has the proper operational controls and administrative reporting procedures and systems in place to effectively advance the HWCOE and to create operating efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance is expected. This position is accountable for integrating HR best practices within the HWCOE and serves as an advocate to and active participant in the University’s community of HR professionals. Under the direction of the Executive Director of Finance and Administration, this position will be responsible for providing outstanding service and support to HWCOE faculty and staff regarding HR while maintaining a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.

Responsibilities of the Director for Human Resources include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Talent Acquisition and Onboarding: Manage, review, and approve faculty and staff hiring and appointments within the HWCOE with assurance that these activities are conducted in accordance with all Federal, State, University, and HWCOE guidelines. Provide support and oversight of immigration compliance, employee background and credential checking for both employment and research agencies is performed and monitored. Support faculty promotion and tenure procedures in collaboration with relevant faculty administrators and academic personnel.
  • Classification and Compensation: Advise HWCOE management on classification needs and staffing requirements with a broad understanding of both short- and long-term goals of administration. Consult with leadership on developing organizational structures that enhance effectiveness and reduce administrative costs within the various HWCOE departments. Consult with managers and supervisors on writing and developing job descriptions to meet staffing needs. Plan and oversee HWCOE compensation plans and philosophies.
  • Employee Relations, Diversity and EEO: Serve as a HWCOE resource on employee relations issues and concerns and partner closely with central units such as Employee Relations and the Provost’s Office in addressing specific complaints and concerns. Conduct employee conduct investigations independently and in partnership with applicable University central offices as appropriate. Oversee and manage employee separations and coordinate applicable employee exit (offboarding) activities. Consult with HWCOE managers on implementing appropriate performance management practices within the HWCOE and assist in addressing performance problems in accordance with applicable University procedures. Interpret and apply Collective Bargaining Agreements for academic related matters in partnership with the HWCOE Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, General Counsel, Chief Negotiator, the Provost’s Office, and University Employee Relations. Provide leadership and guidance to HWCOE management to promote and
    advance diversity efforts within the HWCOE and to assure equal opportunity in all hiring, promotion, and related HR decision making.
  • Benefits and Leave Administration: Assist employees in addressing questions or issues regarding benefits, time reporting, or leave issues in consultation with appropriate specialists in the applicable University central offices. Assure that key benefits and payroll information is appropriately disseminated within the HWCOE when requested by University central offices. Provide oversight of time reporting practices and business processes within the HWCOE to assure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Policy, Planning and Process Improvement: Develop, plan, and implement human resources policies, procedures, and best practices for the HWCOE. Collaborate with University Central Offices in implementing new business processes within the HWCOE and suggest opportunities for improvement or change. Review and monitor understanding and compliance of HR policies and procedures. Manage HWCOE Administrator Evaluations. Actively participate in University-level committees or working groups focused on HR service delivery, business systems, and business process improvement.
  • HR reporting, data management and systems: Assure that HR transactions are processed in a timely and accurate manner in the HWCOE with attention to data integrity. Track and analyze key metrics to monitor customer satisfaction and continuously improve HR service delivery to HWCOE. Manage access for HWCOE staff to University HR Systems. Produce reports and analysis for HWCOE management regarding HR trends and metrics utilizing relevant institutional or local reporting tools.
  • Management: Provide management and oversight of assigned HR and administrative support staff including hiring, coaching, training, work assignments, and managing performance. Responsible for maintaining an inclusive working environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Expected Salary:

$128,000 - $148,000; commensurate with qualifications and experience



Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in an appropriate area and six years of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and eight years of relevant experience.

  • Proven working knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations (e.g., FLSA, FMLA, ADA, ADEA, EEO) as well as UF HR rules and regulations.
  • Ability to collect, evaluate and analyze data as well as interpret and apply applicable rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Keenness and quickness in understanding and dealing with operational situations.
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft as well as experience in a higher education environment.
  • Professional-level human resources experience in a setting of similar scope and complexity to HWCOE.
  • Professional certification (ex. SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional
    (SHRM-SCP)).
