The New Hampshire Youth Success Project (YSP) is a state-wide board of young people who have experienced unaccompanied homelessness while under the age of 25. We believe that we are the experts in our own experiences and must be included in conversations about youth homelessness and share decision making power with adults working on this issue. This includes being paid for our time and expertise, receiving personal and professional development support, and working with adults who are ready to collaborate with us in a real and authentic way.

The YSP connects youth and young adults to spaces where they can make positive change and provides them with support and tools to have meaningful and authentic involvement. The YSP is a Youth Action Board, Youth Action Boards exist across the country and do similar work within their communities.

Vision: The vision of the Youth Success Project is that every young person’s needs are met in the state of New Hampshire and that young people are entrusted to make decisions about their own lives.

Mission: The mission of the Youth Success Project is to create an equitable platform for youth voice in decision making spaces through collective power and advocacy work led by those who have been most marginalized.

The YSP has a Director and Assistant Director who are accountable to the YSP full YSP membership. Directors are responsible for ensuring projects and grant work are carried out in a timely and effective manner that is in alignment with the YSP’s self identified core values, working one-on-one with YSP Leaders to provide them with the tools and support they need to succeed in this work, and coordinating organizational operations. Oversight and supervision of YSP Directors is provided by the YSP’s new Director of Sustainability.

Remote, with some in person meetings and travel within New Hampshire

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Advocate for and amplify the voices of YSP members in adult dominated homeless-systems.
  • Support the development of YSP members as leaders and community advocates in ways that fit their unique interests and goals.
  • Work with adult partners to ensure that they are willing and able to partner with young people with lived experiences in an authentic and meaningful way. Actively push back against tokenism.
  • Develop agendas and facilitate weekly YSP meetings and group decision making. Support YSP Leaders in taking on facilitation roles during general YSP meetings.
  • Actively work to ensure that YSP Agreementsare being upheld by all members during YSP meetings.
  • Utilize and actively uphold YSP Core Valuesin interactions with stakeholders and during YSP sponsored events.
  • Plan and execute quarterly team building activities with YSP members.
  • Support all efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of members, leaders, directors, and the program. Provide interventions as needed to assist members in feeling safe.
  • Be knowledgeable and provide appropriate referrals to community resources to help members get their needs met. Directors should not be providing case management to members or leaders.
  • Operate from an equity based, anti-racist, and anti-adultist perspective.
  • Work to expand the membership of the YSP through community and social media outreach, and in person office hours at youth serving organizations throughout the state of New Hampshire. Uphold applicable memorandums of understanding with organizations.
  • Create strong liaison relationships with agencies and partner organizations; return calls and emails within 24 hours (with the exception of weekends and holidays).
  • Provide one-on-one and group support to 2 YSP leaders. Duties include providing professional development and training for the members, facilitating team meetings, and individual supervision meetings with each member. Hold YSP leaders to agreed-upon leadership commitments.
  • Ensure that YSP leaders and members are given an opportunity to participate in YSP projects and are paid for their time and expertise. Take steps to make sure this is done in a youth centric and timely manner.
  • Work closely with the Balance of State and Manchester Continuums of Care (CoC) to support YSP Leaders in Executive Committee and youth subcommittee roles. Maintain an ongoing and positive relationship with leads from each CoC and uphold agreements listed on the Partnership Agreement.
  • Plan for and execute the requirements of grant in a manner that centers the voices of YSP members as the experts in the issue of youth homelessness. Ensure ongoing involvement of YSP leaders throughout the planning and execution of projects.
  • Develop a workplan to ensure that grant and organizational milestones and timeframes are being met.
  • Maintain an active relationship with the YSP’s fiscal sponsor organization and engage in regular supervision, grant maintenance conversations, and financial planning with the Director of Sustainability.
  • Manage YSP’s social media, website, and traditional media presence. Write and send out a monthly newsletter with YSP updates and organizational progress.
  • Identify and maintain ongoing networking relationships with partner organizations that share common values with the YSP and/or provide support to youth and young adults experiencing homelessness.
  • Actively seek out opportunities for YSP growth and development as an organization. This includes working with the YSP Director of Sustainability to identify grants and other financial opportunities to support the continued work of the YSP.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Sustainability to support the development of a YSP Strategic Plan, ensure leaders and members are being paid, and maintain spending in alignment with the YSP’s budget.
  • Work closely with the Director of Sustainability to ensure all program goals and contractual obligations are met. Contribute to grant reports.
  • Put together monthly and yearly reports on the YSP growth and progress towards identified goals.

Qualifications and Skills:

This is not an entry level position. Experience in the human services field and some higher education is strongly preferred but not required. This is primarily a work-from-home position, however access to a car and an ability to transport others will be required at times.

  • Ability to work closely with the YSP Assistant Director and Leaders to divide up tasks, share responsibilities, and approach this work in a collaborative manner.
  • Personal lived experience in youth homelessness or housing instability preferred.
  • Special consideration given to applicants who have had DCYF or juvenile justice involvement, carceral system involvement, substance use, utilized mental health systems, were pregnant or parenting while a youth, queer identifying, have disabilities, and people of color.
  • Experience working with adolescents or young adults. Fundamentally enjoys young people and is impressed with their resourcefulness and resilience. Believes that young people have important and valuable insight to contribute.
  • Belief in the YSP Core Values, cultural humility, and commitment to equity.
  • Relationship building & collaboration skills: Track record of developing and maintaining trusting relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders and youth. Ability to meet people where they are, find common ground, and inspire collective action.
  • Willingness to advocate for YSP needs and values, and have potentially difficult conversations with youth as well as YSP partners, fiscal sponsor, CoCs, and youth/homeless serving agencies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Willing and able to utilize multiple approaches and work one-on-one with youth to help them understand complex information.
  • Ability to effectively use Facebook, Instagram, email, Zoom, Wix, Google calendar, Trello, and Google Drive.
  • Experience compiling and presenting information in a clear visual, written, and verbal format. Willingness to adapt to a wide range of communication styles.
  • Strong self-advocacy and problem solving skills. Ability to work independently and teach oneself new skills and/or reach out to others for support in learning new skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, anticipate obstacles, support and develop leaders, and self-motivate and direct while working remotely.
  • Preferred familiarity with youth housing and homelessness service systems, specifically HUD’s Continuum of Care structure.
  • Preferred prior experience managing a program, including carrying out grant deliverables, spending in accordance with a budget, developing group norms and policies, and supervision of staff.
  • Preferred experience in team building, leadership development, and meeting facilitation
