Taconic Biosciences is seeking a Director Animal Quality & Attending Veterinarian to join our dedicated Animal Quality team for our US sites. This position works primarily remotely and will require 25% travel to our NY facilities. Qualified candidates will be based in the continental US and be comfortable working Eastern standard hours.

The Starting Pay: $180,000 - $200,000, exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.

The Role:

The Director Animal Quality & Attending Veterinarian ensures industry, national, state, and local compliance at all US Taconic sites. The Director executes a program of clinical excellence, with other veterinary staff, with a primary focus on the Germantown, NY production site. They will partner with the IACUC chair, the IACUC, and stakeholders to advance the animal care and use program to best in class while driving clinical excellence through effective processes and accountability. The Director Animal Quality & Attending Veterinarian will manage and develop veterinary staff, empowering them to learn, grow, and be their best selves. This position includes functional and compliance oversight of the Germantown, NY, Albany, NY, Cambridge City, IN, and San Diego, CA facilitates, along with future US locations.

Duties of the Director Animal Quality & Attending Veterinarian include the following:

  • Leads and ensures US compliance to PHS Assurance, OLAW, NYS DOH Animal Use and Controlled Substance registration, and DEA Controlled Substances.
  • Contributes to completion of the US AAALAC accreditation Program Descriptions, and Taconic SOPs related to the aforementioned, and/or animal care and use.
  • As Attending Veterinarian, partners with the IACUC chair to ensure that the IACUC functions effectively and efficiently.
  • Defines and maintains all US compliance and animal welfare KPIs; trends, analyzes, defines and/or ensures effective closure of corrective actions, reports, and escalates, when needed.
  • Leads and manages the US Animal Quality Team (veterinary group) and Compliance Administrator.
  • Refines clinical program, along with other veterinary staff, to one of clinical excellence, with proactive prevention and mitigation of animal welfare and quality issues via:
    • Clinical data trending and analysis, and management of animal care and use/compliance related corrective actions, including customer complaints, adverse phenotypes, and the like.
    • Facilitates the development and deployment of animals and animal welfare training for all functions.
    • Subject matter expert for animal welfare and quality customer complaint investigations.
    • Benchmarks industry best practices to advance Taconic’s animal care and use program.
  • Key leader who works with customers, partners, and Taconic cross-functional stakeholders to effectively manage and resolve animal welfare concerns.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on laboratory animal medicine, facility design and regulatory requirements to colleagues within and outside Taconic.
  • Prepares and submits scientific/clinical manuscripts for use on our Taconic website, internal and external communications including peer-reviewed publication.
  • Actively develops relationships with veterinarians and animal welfare officers at Taconic customer sites to support our value proposition of customer intimacy.
  • Signatory for NY sites international shipping paperwork
  • Escalates non-compliance and concerns to the IO, as necessary.

Education and Experience:

  • DVM, DACLAM required, PhD desirable.
  • NYS Veterinary Practice License
  • USDA accreditation in the state of NY
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience and/or training
  • Working knowledge of US animal regulatory requirements
  • Experience in managing a professional staff and senior level decision making
  • Experience in developing, interpreting, or changing organizational policies and procedures
  • Prior IACUC participation as a voting member
  • Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on complex topics to internal and external senior management
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.

Travel:

  • Regular travel – generally no more than one trip per month. Overnight travel may be necessary. Travel to NY facilities 20% - 25% with occasional needs to travel to other US sites.

Internet:

  • This role requires reliable internet service, Taconic requires a minimum speed of 200 MPS to be obtained. A stipend of $25 per pay period is provided to aid in this request. Employees who cannot or will not get improved internet service are welcome to work at a Taconic office of their choice.
