OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
This occupation requires the performance of diagnostics related to hardware, software, component(s), design produced, internal or external failure during test function. Complete operational checkout, disassembly repair for troubleshooting purposes, reassemble, test alignment and correction of trouble in modified, new and production electronic systems, line replaceable units (LRU’s), shop replaceable units (SRUs) and other electronic end items.
WORK PERFORMED
- Performs operational checkout and diagnostic troubleshooting of SRUs and end items using either interim or MTEE testers with recognized Engineering procedures.
- Maintains accurate, complete records of work performed utilizing proper procedures and forms.
- Typically performs assignments which require advanced technical knowledge of electronic principals and theory.
- Malfunction diagnosis and troubleshooting performed requires extensive internal circuitry analysis of highly complex circuits, including coordination and communication with appropriate engineering.
- May determine and recommend necessary changes in electronic test equipment and/or revision of methods and operational procedures as deemed advisable by results of operational test.
- Must use and understand electronics fundamentals.
- Must be able to diagnose wiring problems and Circuit card assemblies, recognize defective components (opens, shorts, etc.) and polarity problems.
- Must understand and be able to apply standard electronic shop theory, practices and procedures to problem solving.
- Must use and understand schematics, sketches, test requirement specifications, check sheets and instruction manuals, and test failure documentation as required to perform work described above.
TYPICAL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
- Tools used: Electrical and electronic hand and other shop or power tools.
- Equipment used: Electrical and electronic test equipment including ohmmeters, ammeters, oscilloscopes, audio oscillators, frequency and power measuring equipment, pulse generators, analyzers, recorders, calibrators and all types of microwave testing equipment.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY REQUIRED
- Must have a thorough understanding of electronic fundamentals including metric/standard measurement conversion, analog, digital and radio frequency technology.
- Must be able to make complete operational test of electronic end items and SRUs, including major troubleshooting.
- Must have the understanding and ability to use complex electrical and electronics test equipment and related instruments.
- Must understand and be able to apply electronic shop theory, practices and procedures and understand and be able to apply technical knowledge in the field of electronics to solve complex problems.
- The ability to perform diagnostics/problem solving that designates repair/rework/modification involving thru-hole and surface mount designed circuit card assemblies.
- Must understand complex electric/electronic circuit diagrams, specification and blueprints.
- Must use shop handbooks, manuals and reference material.
- Must be able to develop charts diagrams, procedures and work sequences for testing SRUs, LRUs and other electronics end items.
- Have a demonstrated ability to self verify test printouts, documentation and/or physical attributes related to failure diagnostics that are required as a part of test completion.
- Must have successfully completed pre-placement testing for required knowledge/skills, (i.e. including Analog, Digital, ATE /MTE problem solving, etc.)
- Will require the certification/verification of the following skills: Soldering, Electrical Crimping, CCA MOD/Rework/Repair, Surface Mount Assembly & Soldering and Auto Assembly Machine operations.
- Must successfully complete and maintain certification(s)/training(s) as required to perform essential functions of the job described herein.
EDUCATION
- Will have an associate degree in electronics technology and/or DD214 Military technical electronic training.
