Development and Communications Manager
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of San Mateo County recruits, trains and supports volunteers to work one-on-one with children and youth in the San Mateo County foster care and juvenile justice systems. CASA volunteers form trusted relationships with young people, acting as a mentor and advocate in court and the larger community. By being a consistent adult presence in a child’s life amidst changing homes, caretakers, social workers and other professionals, our volunteers provide hope and healing to children who are navigating traumatic circumstances.
Position Overview:
The Development and Communications Manager is responsible for creating content, programming, strategies, and systems that keep existing donors engaged with CASA’s work and introduce new donors to the organization. The ideal candidate will take an integrated approach to communications, events, cultivation, and stewardship to ensure a high-quality experience for donors and prospective donors. They will have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, exceptional project management skills, and excellent communication skills. The Development and Communications Manager will manage donor communications and engagement opportunities, as well as the organization’s broader communications function. They will work closely with both Development and Programs team members to create compelling content that keeps donors, community members, and other stakeholders informed about CASA’s work. This vital staff member will work closely with the Development team, the Executive Director, the Programs team, donors, volunteers, and other stakeholders to expand our ability to serve children and youth in our community.

Status: Full-time, exempt; with occasional evening and weekend work required
Location: Redwood Shores, California. This is a hybrid position requiring 2 days per week in the office.
Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Donor Engagement
- Manage, plan, and implement CASA’s donor engagement opportunities, including events, appeals, communications, and other opportunities for donors to deepen their understanding of and commitment to CASA’s work.
- In collaboration with the Development team, develop an annual donor engagement strategy and calendar.
- Advance individual giving by supporting the outreach and solicitation efforts of the Executive Director and Director of Development, including but not limited to portfolio management, drafting correspondence, research, and strategy.
- Develop segmented donor audiences and craft tailored communications for each group.
- Develop reports and use data through our donor database (DonorPerfect) to drive donor stewardship and cultivation activities.
- Review current individual donors and develop a dynamic prospect list with giving history, capacity, and personal information, updating and growing the list on a regular basis.
- Conduct donor data analysis and research to identify giving trends among our existing donor base and recommend opportunities for further cultivation or engagement.
- Manage fundraising events, including overseeing contract event support as needed and liaising with Board of Directors, staff, and community volunteers as the main organizational point of contact.
- Lead fundraising event sponsorship and in-kind solicitation efforts, including developing sponsor benefit packages, supporting volunteers’ solicitations, and identifying and soliciting new prospects.
- Develop event programming, including speaker selection, scripting, and run of show.
- Manage event communications and marketing.
- Manage event budgets, track expenses, and report on event revenue.
- Work closely with Director of Development to create customized engagement strategies and timelines for major donors.
- Other fundraising duties as assigned.
Communications
- Lead organizational communication strategy, including both donor communications and communications directed at a broader audience of community stakeholders.
- Serve as the organization’s lead storytelling expert, working with volunteers, donors, and staff to collect, curate, and communicate stories that demonstrate CASA’s impact. Provide training and guidance as needed to those speaking on CASA’s behalf.
- Create compelling content for donor and stakeholder communications, including but not limited to newsletters, social media, online and direct mail campaigns, surveys, event marketing, one-pagers, brochures, annual report, press releases, and other materials.
- Develop and implement a regular email communications calendar to keep donors and stakeholders informed of CASA’s work and engaged with the organization’s mission.
- Manage and develop content for CASA’s social media presence. Coordinate with Programs staff as necessary through regular meetings to schedule and develop content related to volunteer recruitment and engagement.
- Manage and maintain CASA’s website (Squarespace).
- Manage contract design support and print vendors as necessary.
- Provide templates, ensure brand compliance, and edit content as necessary for high-stakes external collateral created by other CASA staff.
- Create and maintain systems for keeping donor contact info organized and up to date, including segmentation and integration with CASA’s donor database (DonorPerfect).
- Other communication duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of relevant experience with fundraising, communications, and/or events, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
- Excellent written, verbal, and digital communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate CASA’s mission, programs, and accomplishments to current and potential donors and other stakeholders.
- Exceptional project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
- Exceptional relationship management skills, with the ability to bring multiple stakeholders together to achieve a common goal.
- Experience creating external-facing communications content, such as newsletters, appeals, annual reports, etc. Experience with nonprofit donor communications preferred.
- Strong cultural competency and ability to use ethical storytelling framework to communicate CASA's impact while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
- Experience planning and managing fundraising events preferred.
- Ability to effectively manage contract support and vendors as necessary.
- Self-directed learner and problem solver. Able to learn new skills, proactively anticipate problems and opportunities, and develop a plan for addressing them.
- High level of comfort learning and using a donor database (DonorPerfect) for donor engagement and communications.
- Experience with Constant Contact (or another similar email management system) and Canva preferred. Familiarity with graphic design tools such as InDesign a plus but not required.
- Spanish language skills a plus a but not required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook.
- Ability to successfully pass FBI, DOJ, DMV, SSN and CACI background checks.
Salary and Benefits
- Starting salary range $78-85K DOE
- 160 hours of PTO to start, 14 paid holidays
