Job Summary:
The Dean of Academics / Literacy Coach is a dual role. In the role of the Dean of Academics the incumbent works with the Principal, Academic Officers and Assistant Principal in the management of curriculum and instruction. The Dean of Academics serves as the point of contact for all instructional staff, students, and parents for their specific program. The Dean of Academics provides guidance to instructors to ensure that each course is appropriate for students in the regular and summer programs. The Dean of Academics sets a professional tone for the program and serves as a positive role model for staff and students. The Dean of Academics provide for the systemic study and analysis of the teaching-learning process and the development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs; Provide for the development, alignment, and implementation of quality curriculum to enhance student achievement; Plan and provide professional development for teachers and staff.
In the role of the Literacy Coach the incumbent is responsible for observing instructional delivery of Literacy and providing feedback that will enhance teacher development and supporting teachers in developing lesson plans, analyzing data and the sharing of best practices. The Literacy Coach will have a hands-on approach to improving instruction and effectiveness, by working at various levels (system-wide, school, classroom, content area, and student), to directly foster teacher development, improve ELA instruction, and increase student learning.
The Dean of Academics / Literacy Coach works as a part of the instructional team to provide student-centered coaching services and professional development that supports the implementation of the school's literacy program in order to meet the needs of all students. The building of relationships is a critical component of this learning environment, the team works together to identify student needs that may be barriers to success. Teachers collaborate with team members to analyze different means of meeting student needs and communicates with students, parents, and other team members about student progress and plans for next steps.
Dean of Academics Responsibilities:
- Coach and train teachers to utilize appropriate research-based instructional strategies to meet students learning needs;
- Provide teachers with the instructional support, to provide targeted interventions, modifications, and adaptations to all students with disabilities in accordance with their Individual Education Plans;
- Reviews lesson plans and provide teachers with the instructional support to deliver targeted interventions, modifications and adaptations to English Language Learners in accordance with each ESOL student’s language proficiency level and their identified instructional needs;
- Directs and clarifies expectations and responsibilities of instructional staff through training activities and immediate feedback
- Ensures that all instructional staff participate in the across schools Professional Learning Communities sessions and in-house Professional Learning opportunities.
- Ensures that all instructional staff participate in the chartering district’s approved content-area professional development opportunities
- Supports instructional staff, encourage collaboration between instructors and teaching assistants, and gather information through classroom observations
- Work in a supportive and collaborative fashion with district personnel;
- Provide leadership in the identification, evaluation, and selection of instructional programs, strategies, resources, and equipment with regard to increased student achievement;
- Works with School Administration to observe and evaluate the classroom environment.
- Ensures that the instructional team administers formative and summative assessments including baseline, benchmark and statewide assessments as per the school and district’s assessment calendars.
- Ensures that the school implements a Direct Instruction cycle that is consistent with the state’s assessment calendar and aligns with the NorthStar Non-negotiables;
- Coordinates and implements an instructional data cycle that incorporates consistent data analysis that is then used to formulate instructional decisions;
- Ensures that all teachers maintain accurate student attendance record of all Direct Instruction Classes in the in-house Student Information System (eSchoolware);
- Ensures that teachers maintain academic portfolios for students in Direct Instruction classes
- Provides information to the principal regarding teachers’ effectiveness in lesson planning, student learning, and classroom management;
- Participates in school based leadership opportunities (i.e. team meeting, Lead teacher meeting, etc.).
- Ensures teachers are organized, manage their time well and are using the appropriate research-based curriculum that conforms with conforms with NorthStar, State and District guidelines.
- Other duties as deemed necessary by the Principal;
Literacy Coach Responsibilities:
- Provide essential supervision to improve literacy through listening, reading, writing, and speaking;
- Identify, implement, and monitor students level of Reading Interventions needed and students’ progress toward graduation;
- Implement the school’s Multi-tiered System of Support and ensure that students receive appropriately tiered instructional support using the identified approved evidenced based curriculum and targeted interventions as needed;
- Progress monitor students and participate in the school’s data cycle and Professional Learning Communities’ Meetings across all NorthStar Academies and in-house as per the school’s Multi-tiered System of Support Plan;
- Using the Florida Language Arts BEST Standards and the school’s adopted and approved Intensive Reading Curriculum, guide teachers in developing weekly lesson plans that are consistent with all components of the school’s standard lesson plan format and the district’s approved Reading Plan;
- Ensures that teachers provide small group instruction and “pull-out” reading interventions to students who do not have their reading requirement met.
- Directs and supports the school’s “Literacy Across the Curriculum” initiative and consult with other content area teachers, special education teachers, parents and students, advising on strategies and activities that may be used to enhance a student's reading skills
- Assist in the development and implementation of individual education service plans for students;
- In accordance with the school’s reporting policies, keep school administrators informed about the reading programs/strategies, and students’ progression.
- Provides professional development on the major reading components as needed, based on an analysis of student performance data, administration analysis of instructional assessment and providing differentiated instruction and intensive intervention;
- Assist in modeling effective instructional strategies for teachers;
- Work with teachers to ensure that the approved evidence-based reading program is implemented with fidelity;
- Continue to increase their knowledge base in best practices in reading instruction, intervention, and instructional reading strategies
- Assist teachers in working with students in whole and small group instruction in literacy;
- Work with the school’s principal and or designated administrator to plan and implement a consistent program of improving reading achievement using strategies that demonstrate a strategically significant effect on improving student’s academic outcomes;
- Prioritize time to those teachers, activities and roles that will have the greatest impact on student achievement in reading, namely coaching and mentoring in classrooms;
- Any other duties assigned by the Principal;

Required
- Bachelor’s Degree and Florida State Teacher Certification;
- Reading Endorsement;
- Minimum Three (3) years of experience in education;
- Knowledge of evidence based reading research;
- Special expertise in quality reading instruction and fusing reading strategies into instruction;
- Highly effective rating on most recent available evaluation that contains students achievement data;
- Knowledge of the social and cultural factors impacting employment success;
- Familiarity with community employment resources and local labor market.
Preferred
- Master’s Degree in related field and Florida State Teacher Certification;
- Evidence of working knowledge and comfort level with instructional technology;
- Knowledge of employment/career education and guidance techniques and methods;
- Experience working with at-risk student population;
- Evidence of educational experiences after college (fellowships, summer study, or graduate course work to pursue greater depth in a subject area, specific instructional methodology, curriculum development, special education, technology, etc.);
- Proven experience working with student population in some capacity;
