Ring's End, Inc. of Milford, CT is hiring a full-time Carfsman to safely produce high quality millwork in a wood shop environment, for both custom and stock inventory. This person will set up, operate and tend to various woodworking machines and equipment. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CRAFTSMAN
A Craftsman makes products from lumber and synthetic materials. Many of these products are one off pieces to fit the use on a particular jobsite to the architects specs. You would be responsible for prepping material for the CNC operators, assembling materials after they are run on the CNC as well as general woodworking skills.
The Craftsman should be able to set up, operate, and tend all woodworking machines, such as saws, milling machines, drill presses, sanders, and wood fastening machines. Operators should be able to use equipment to cut and shape wooden parts, and to verify dimensions, using a template, caliper, and tape rule. Must have working knowledge of adhesives ie wood glue, contact cement, and various other adhesives.
Responsibilities:
- Start machines, adjust controls, and make trial cuts to ensure that machinery is operating properly.
- Determine product specifications and materials, work methods, and machine setup requirements, according to blueprints, oral or written instructions, drawings, or work orders.
- Feed stock through feed mechanisms or conveyors into planing, shaping, boring, mortising, or sanding machines to produce desired components.
- Adjust machine tables or cutting devices and set controls on machines to produce specified cuts or operations.
- Monitor operation of machines and make adjustments to correct problems and ensure conformance to specifications.
- Select knives, saws, blades, cutter heads, cams, bits, or belts, according to workpiece, machine functions, and product specifications.
- Examine finished workpieces for smoothness, shape, angle, depth-of-cut, and conformity to specifications, and verify dimensions, visually and using hands, rules, calipers, templates, or gauges.
- Install and adjust blades, cutterheads, boring-bits, or sanding-belts, using hand tools and rules.
- Inspect and mark completed workpieces and package them for safe shipment to next destination whether it be a jobsite or a store.
- Push or hold workpieces against, under, or through cutting, boring or shaping mechanisms.
- Inspect pulleys, drive belts, guards, and fences on machines to ensure that machines will operate safely
- Remove and replace worn parts, bits, belts, sandpaper, and shaping tools.
- Clean and maintain products, machines, and work areas.
- Attach and adjust guides, stops, clamps, chucks, and feed mechanisms, using hand tools.
- Have a working knowledge of gluing pieces of wood together or pressing and affix wood veneer to wood surfaces.
- Set up, operate, and tend woodworking machines such as power planers, sanders, lathes, jointers, and routers that cut and shape components from lumber, plywood, and other wood products.
