Position Summary: The Controller will manage and maintain effective accounting, cash management and financial reporting systems for all funds and provide general checks and balances. Additionally, the Controller will oversee all Accounting Office operations including leading a team responsible for student collections, payroll processing, cash management, reconciliations, and accounts payable. The Controller will lead the development and implementation of sound financial policies and procedures and will work with external auditors and coordinate the fiscal year end audits and tax preparation.
Primary Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
- Prepare financial reports for the Board of Trustees and Executive Team.
- Prepare and issue financial and budget reports on a monthly basis or as requested.
- Maintain the general ledger chart of accounts for all funds and supervise operational accounting tasks such as journal entries, account reconciliations, and invoice management.
- Coordinate the preparation and on-going review and control of the University budget, as well as prepare and ensure timely preparation of legal, budget, and tax reporting documents, as requested.
- Communicate with external auditors on issues requiring professional guidance. Prepare work papers and schedules for the annual external audit.
- Oversee the onboarding of new employees to the payroll system, ensuring proper classifications of roles and benefits as prescribed by state and federal regulations.
- Process payroll related transactions.
- Manage the recording and accounting for all leases under new accounting rules.
- Manage the student payment process, daily cashiering monitoring and reporting, student payment plans and deferments.
- Ensure the implementation of systems and internal controls to support the integrity of the financial operations.
- Work closely with Financial Aid in the management of the accounts receivable process, collection effort, student refunds process, and other special accounting projects.
- Manage the accounts payable and budget expense reporting system, review and update as needed.
- Direct, review, and evaluate the Accounting Office staff and implement professional development programs.
Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge and understanding of accounting methods, best practices, and standards.
- Strong knowledge of higher education accounting principles and processes.
- Solid experience coordinating audit activities, management reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
- Strong technology skills including experience with computer-based accounting systems.
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of a Christian environment.
- Strong understanding of and commitment to teamwork and a cooperative work environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated proficiency in organizing and planning.
- Excellent leadership and managerial skills.
- Must possess strong analytical and problem solving skills, decision making skills, effective listening skills, stress management skills, and time management skills.
- Must demonstrate a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements of the Job: General office environment. Position requires extended amounts of sitting and working with a computer.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting or closely related field required.
- Certified Public Accountant or audit preparation experience (strongly preferred).
- QuickBooks Enterprise experience required.
- Paylocity payroll system experience preferred.
- Higher education accounting experience preferred.
