Schedule: 9:00am to 5:30pm M-Th, with flexibility to meet program and staff needs as required.
Compensation: $35-$40/hour, depending on experience, skills, and qualifications.

JOB SUMMARY:
The YouthBuild Construction (Vocational) Instructor works in a nationally accredited program with young men and women ages 16 to 24 who have not had success in traditional school settings. The Construction Instructor is part of a dynamic team of professionals who, together, manage components of a comprehensive academic, vocational, and career pathways training program. This position provides both classroom-based and job-site specific vocational training and supervision to participants of Homework Hangout Club, Inc.’s (HHC) program. This role also includes oversight HHC’s involvement in the rehabilitation of low-income housing properties.
Work is performed, reviewed, and evaluated under the supervision of the Chief Operations Officer of Homework Hangout Club Inc.
RESPONSIBILITIES: (essential functions of the job)
This position contributes to the achievement of the HHC YouthBuild programs through the following core accountabilities:
- Manages the occupational skills training and associated curriculum of the HHC program;
- Teaches the national construction certification curriculum to students in adherence with prescribed NCCER proficiency benchmarks. Administers module tests and tracks participant results, providing additional support to students where needed;
- Ensures quality instruction of a variety of construction skills including demolition, drywall, green building, finish carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, etc.;
- Ensures worksite safety, modeling and reinforcing proper construction techniques and all safety procedures including proper use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment;
- Assists in the evaluation of student knowledge and skills in construction;
- Supports the academic and leadership goals of the program by incorporating both of these into construction shop and building site activities whenever possible.
Provides supervision and guidance to students and monitors their progress and quality of work:
- Defines weekly work assignments and goals;
- Develops detailed construction plan and schedule;
- Sets and maintain high standards of classroom and jobsite behavior and academic achievement for all students.
Provides clear and consistent feedback to students:
- Assists in the development of job opportunities for trainees in conjunction with other members of HHC staff and, where appropriate, assists students in setting career goals.
- Cultivates and maintains professional working relationships with a variety of external partners in the construction and related industries.
- Serves as an advisor to a small group of students and participates in alumni follow-up activities and community service events.
- Collaborates with the Academic Instructor where there may be content overlap.
- Displays high ethical and professional behavior and standards, establishes open lines of communication working with students, parents, staff members and external partners.
- Submits student attendance, grading and certificate data in a timely fashion.
- Participates as part of the staff team in the recruitment of students, the development or updating of programs and initiatives, and in the support of alumni and alumni programs.
- Attends meetings and trainings as required by HHC YouthBuild and HHC agency.
- Develops construction budget, monitors costs, and orders materials and supplies.
- Performs other related tasks and assumes such other related responsibilities as needed
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Licensed contractor and/or person with demonstrated and extensive experience in construction or construction management; specific experience with residential home rehabilitation/construction necessary.
- Trade journeyman in Laborer’s trade preferred (or other trade with residential home construction experience);
- NCCER instructor certification preferred;
- OSHA certification strongly preferred.
WORK EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
- At least two (2) years’ experience working with young people in education (including vocational education/training program), alternative or vocational programs, workforce development, social services or similar preferred.
- A sincere interest in working with a very diverse group of young people to help them acquire the skills they need to succeed in the workforce.
- Ability to work patiently and positively with young people who may not have experienced much success in school. Experience in effectively handling conflict.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team environment.
- Ability to set and consistently maintain appropriate boundaries.
- Ability to interact with students, staff and external partners in a positive and professional manner. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and consistently.
- A demonstrated commitment to both personal and professional growth. A willingness and eagerness to learn, grow and improve as an educator.
- Ability to both give and receive constructive feedback.
- An understanding of, and sensitivity to, the needs of young people from a variety of different racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Willingness to speak to individuals and groups for the purpose of training, partnership and program promotion.
- Ability to track and leverage key relationships with local housing authorities, various other nonprofits and commercial entities that regularly interact with the program.
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License. Incumbent must be able to operate a company motor vehicle to conduct HHC business on a frequent basis to transport students, travel to appointments and meetings, or pick up supplies relative to the program.
